Change Of Plans

Thanks to the winter storm that came to the eastern part of the U.S. my business trip was cancelled. And, here I thought I was going to have lots of time to read on the plane and start and finish my mystery for my book group meeting next week.

Anyway, last night instead of reading my mystery book I caught up with World Literature Today – the February issue. March is still in its packing slip. I love reading this magazine because I’m finding out about books that I might not easily find on the shelves at B&N or on bestseller lists. I feel like my world really does open up to so many more possibilities.

Here are some of the books that I’m interested in from this edition:

Black Bread by Emili Teixidor. Set in the Catalan countryside, a young boy goes to live with his grandparents in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil war.

How I Became A North Korean by Krys Lee. Three disparate lives converge when they flee their homes, finding themselves in a small Chinese town just across the river from North Korea. They will fight to survive a dangerous place.

About My Mother by Tahar Ben Jelloun. Guided by her fragmented memories, Ben Jelloun reimagines his mother’s life in Fez at the end of the war, in the heavily ritualised world of custom and tradition that saw her married, pregnant, and widowed by sixteen.

Don’t these sound interesting?

So for those of you in the middle of the storm, I hope you are bundled up and reading a lot of good books.

Tuesday Intro

I mentioned in my last post that I was going to start a new book and I did. So, I thought I’d join in on this week’s First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros hosted by Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea.

“It is the year all the members of my family will end up fleeing Mexico, following Grandpa’s disappearance, but at that point I don’t know for sure what’s happened to him. I just need to be around my friends. I need them to take care of me, to tell me our lives will go on as expected, Italy’s calling, it will be splendid.”

From Barefoot Dogs by Antonio Ruiz-Camacho.

I got to hear the writer at last year’s Texas Book Festival so this is a book I was eager to read. Just had to wait for the right mood. It’s a book of interconnected short stories and I admit I don’t typically reach for short stories but so far, I’m really liking this one.

What do you think? Are you curious to find out what’s happened to the grandfather in this story? Do you enjoy short stories?

This & That

I hope you had a wonderful weekend. After a beautiful Friday, we got quite a bit of rain and had to get out the fleece jacket again. I met up with some friends to celebrate a birthday and we had delicious pizza at Bufalina. They also scored high marks for the way they presented the check… In a vintage book. Isn’t that awesome?

Anyway, we did make it to the bookstore today and I bought a couple of magazines. One for my mom and one for me. I got a little magazine from PreventionGuide on Sugar Detox. Haha… I’m laughing already as I know this will be a hard one for me. I have a terrible sweet tooth. Anyway, I’ll be curious to try out a couple of the recipes. There is one for granola bars that looks promising. I’ll keep you posted.

I wandered around the aisles for a bit and saw a couple of books that sounded good and I want to add to my TBR list. They are:

Bones and All by Camille DeAngelis. From the publisher: an astonishingly original coming-of-age tale that is at once a gorgeously written horror story as well as a mesmerizing meditation on female power and sexuality.

Everything I Don’t Remember by Jonas Hassen Khemiri. A young man named Samuel dies in a horrible car crash. Was it an accident or was it suicide? To answer that question, an unnamed writer with an agenda of his own sets out to map Samuel’s last day alive.

The Unseeing by Anna Mazzola. A thrilling debut based based on the real case of Sarah Gale, a seamstress and mother sentenced to hang for her alleged role in a shocking murder, bringing together the accused with an idealistic young lawyer assigned to investigate whether she is a guilty murderer or an unfortunate victim.

Have you heard about or read these books? Alright, I hope you have a great start to the week. I finished one book this weekend so I think I’ll treat myself to a new book from my bookshelves.
