Tuesday Intro

It’s been too long since I’ve participated in one of these so that means it’s the perfect time for a Tuesday Intro post. First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros is hosted by Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea. Here’s my intro:

“He shouldn’t really be driving; they all know that. But Solly has probably had the least to drink of all of them and, besides, he has a calm self-possession that makes him able to carry off all sorts of excesses and still remain the reliable, charming boy next door.”

From The Chalk Pit by Elly Griffiths.

You just know these kids are going to be in a bit of trouble don’t you? What do you think happens next and would you keep reading?

I’m actually about half way through the book and good thing as it’s due back at the library tomorrow. The Ruth Galloway series is one of my favorite and this is turning out to be another great entry. There are messy relationships, great characters and of course bones, always bones being found somewhere. If you haven’t ever tried this series I do highly recommend it and, yes, I also recommend started from the beginning.

hat about you, what book are you reading?

Visiting Monterrey

I’m back from a quick trip to visit my family in Monterrey. Had a great time seeing them and catching up with old family friends as well. There is so much I didn’t get a chance to do but must plan another trip. I only had a limited time to spend at the Feria Internacional del Libro (International Book Fair) but the three hours we were there were lots of fun.

The fair goes on for a whole week and they have events for children, readings and book signings and of course lots of booths to visit. I saw booths from Penguin and Harper Collins but I tried to look through other publishers that I’m not as familiar with and are not easy to find here in the U.S.

One of my favorite booths was by Gandhi bookstore. They have a very nice shop in Monterrey but as I wasn’t going to go to the bookstore on a separate visit I figured I should take advantage then and there. I’m glad I did as I found a book I had to have, Despues del Invierno by Guadalupe Nettel. I really need to get more acquainted with contemporary Mexican authors.

Another that was so interesting was the Editorial Atisbo. They are actually a magazine publisher but they focus solely on history of Nuevo Leon. We had a great chat with one of the reps from the booth and I had to buy a four magazines. I’ll be sharing them with my mom as I know she’ll get a kick out of them. One of the editions that I was so excited to find has a feature story on the Hotel Ancira. This famous hotel has been around for more than 100 years and although I have never stayed it has a special place in my heart because that was the first hotel my dad worked at as he began his career as a chef.

Finally, the last goody I picked up was also from another booth I really enjoyed and that was Regia Cartonera. They also publish some poetry and short stories but their main goals is to focus on recycling. All of their books are made out of cardboard and recycled materials. I picked up a journal of course and am looking forward to using it.

Hopefully next time I go to the fair I’ll have a chance to hear some of the author presentations and/or at least spend more time! But it was a blast and now I get to look forward to another book fair in a few weeks as the Texas Book Festival kicks off in November.

I hope you guys had a great week and I think I’ll spend the rest of this evening with my Atisbo magazines.

Challenge Update

Now that we are into the last quarter of the year I thought it would be a good time to see how I’m doing with my current reading challenges. I’m currently participating in six reading challenges. While I have read at least one book in all challenges, I’m behind my goals for each. In some cases, way behind.

Here are my stats so far:
R.I.P. – Read Frankenstein and watched The Mummy. Frankenstein was fabulous; The Mummy not so much. If I want to complete this challenge I just need to read one more book.
Back to the Classics – Two books from the 12 categories.
What’s In a Name – Two books out of six.
Read My Own Damn Books – My goal is to read 20 and so far I’m at 11.
Poetry Reading challenge – Two collections out of five.
Japanese Literature challenge – Read at least one book, so far none.

Let’s see what the rest of the year brings. There are several other things to look forward to still, like Non-Fiction November, German Literature month also in November and no doubt I’m probably forgetting others that sound like fun. How about you, how are you doing with your challenges?

But my mind is going to be on writers from Latin America and specifically Mexico for the next few days. You see, I’m off to Monterrey to do a quick visit with my family and fingers crossed that I’ll also get a chance to stop by the International Book Fair in Monterrey this weekend.

So I hope you have a great week ahead and I’ll catch up with you soon!
