Happy Thanksgiving

Hello Friends – Just stopping by to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and if you don’t celebrate the holiday, then happy weekend!

We won’t be having a big celebration but I’m sure we’ll try to go out for a nice walk and enjoy watching some movies and just relaxing. I think this weekend will be one for trying out some new recipes too.

I did make a pit stop at the new Central Library and it was fun. Gotta stock up on books while the library is closed right? Ha. I’ll have to tell you more about that in another post. For now I’m trying to catch up on emails. Oh my goodness how many emails can one get about Black Friday & Cyber Monday sales? I admit I’m a bit tempted by those from Barnes & Noble and some of my favorite crafty sites.

I hope you all enjoy some time with your families and friends. Wishing all of you a wonderful weekend and more book talk soon!

Nonfiction November Week 4 – Picking Favorites

For this week’s Nonfiction November post we turn to host Katie at Doing Dewey.  Today I’ll be addressing Nonfiction Favorites: We’ve talked about how you pick nonfiction books in previous years, but this week I’m excited to talk about what makes a book you’ve read one of your favorites. Is the topic pretty much all that matters? Are there particular ways a story can be told or particular writing styles that you love? Do you look for a light, humorous approach or do you prefer a more serious tone? Let us know what qualities make you add a nonfiction book to your list of favorites.

I think the most important thing for me is that a nonfiction read has to seem like a story. I want to learn new things and reading interesting facts, no doubt, but I don’t want to feel like I’m reading a textbook. I want the writer to transport me to another city, timeframe and/or circumstances. Here are some books that I would rank as some of my favorite nonfiction reads in the past couple of years:

While The City Slept by Eli Sanders. A Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter’s gripping account of one young man’s path to murder–and a wake-up call for mental health care in America.

Midnight In Mexico by Alfredo Corchado. You can read more of my thoughts on this one here.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells—taken without her knowledge—became one of the most important tools in medicine.

I can’t wait to see what others have listed as their favorites. Let me know if you’ve read some of these.

A Bit Messy

Where has the week gone? I have been so busy seeing friends, former co-workers, networking, crafting and now things at Casa Bookgirl are getting messy! Here’s a look at one of my craft tables. I think there are various journals underneath the madness. Ha.

It’s been a good week though. I have a lot of plans for the weekend… read, bookbinding, going to EAST, and so many other things I want to do. I really need to finish Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz as my book group meets next week. The book is good but I’m not sure that I’m loving it. More on this later. Plus, I have to return the book to the library soon.

Oh and catching up on book reviews. Can you believe I still haven’t even told you about some of the books that I read while I was on vacation? Thank goodness I kept notes. I also want to go through my stash of craft magazines. I hate to get rid of some of these but let’s be real, when do I look through these? So they may find themselves on the destash section of my shop. Going through these though has reminded me of several publications that I really enjoyed and that aren’t in print any longer.

I seem to be all over the place in this post. Anyway, tell me about you, what are you up to this weekend? And is anyone tired yet of all the Black Friday/Cyber Monday ads? My inbox is inundated with emails. I admit it’s hard to even think of the holidays around here when I’m wearing shorts and a t-shirt. We’re supposed to hit 84 today. I need iced coffee. Ok, have a wonderful weekend everyone and more bookish talk soon!
