Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween! It’s been a super busy month but I’m so happy to say that work has calmed down a bit and our boil water notice was finally lifted on Sunday evening. It definitely makes you grateful for having access to water and how lucky we are that we only “suffered” for a week whereas so many people around the world struggle with this every single day.

So this month I didn’t get a lot of reading but the books I did read, I liked a lot. I read: Still Waters by Viveca Sten, The Temptation of Forgiveness by Donna Leon and Disappearance at Devil’s Rock by Paul Tremblay.

I’m sad to report that I did not complete my R.I.P. reading challenge. I had set out to read four spooky books but only read two and those were The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons and Disappearance at Devil’s Rock. Wow, both were really good and just that right amount of creepy for the season.

Next month I’m looking forward to participating in Nonfiction November and Margaret Atwood reading month (a post on this next). I’ve slacked off on nonfiction reading after a good start earlier in the year and it’s been years since I’ve read anything by Atwood.

Hope you get lots of treats this Halloween! Let me know how your month was and what you are looking forward to in November.

Nonfiction November

I’m so excited that Nonfiction November is back. In case you are new to this, every Monday the hosts of the event will put up a prompt to get us talking and thinking about nonfiction reads. You can find out more on the dates, hosts and topics for this year by checking out any of the hosts’ blogs. Thank you to all the hosts for a great event. Now, let’s get started with this week’s prompt.

Week 1: (Oct. 29 to Nov. 2) – Your Year in Nonfiction (Kim @ Sophisticated Dorkiness): Take a look back at your year of nonfiction and reflect on the following questions – What was your favorite nonfiction read of the year? Do you have a particular topic you’ve been attracted to more this year? What nonfiction book have you recommended the most? What are you hoping to get out of participating in Nonfiction November?

One of my reading goals this year was to incorporate more nonfiction reads. Actually this has been a goal for the last few years and I seem to start off with a lot of enthusiasm and will read a couple of books but I end up falling back on my favorite genres.

One nonfiction book I read earlier in the year that I’ve recommended a lot was How To Travel Without Seeing by Andrés Neuman. The writer is on a book tour and this is basically a look at his travel diary. He spends lots of time in airports, taxis and hotels and along the way trying to see the differences in each country through their writers and poets.

It made me realize there are a lot of Latin American authors I have never read and how I should make more of an effort. I mean, how lucky am I that I can read in Spanish? I seriously have no excuse for not reading books in Spanish. Anyway, I feel like I do stay somewhat in the know about issues that are prominent in Latin America but I think reading more from the various countries’ authors can only serve to help me learn more about each country’s history and societal concerns.

As for me goals for Nonfiction November, I hope I can finish at least one nonfiction read. No doubt I’ll find lots of books I want to read via everyone’s posts. I don’t really have a particular subject I’m leaning towards but I do have some potential reads I’m interested in so I’ll try to do a separate posts on those.

What about you, are you joining in? Are you a nonfiction reader?

Rain, Rain and more Rain

Hello Friends! Sorry I’ve been M.I.A. but I’ve been swamped at work. I have another busy week so posting may be a bit spotty for the next couple of days.

Aside from work, let’s see, I can tell you about all the rain we’ve been having. I don’t remember a Fall quite like this one. Unfortunately silt and debris from floodwaters have overwhelmed Austin’s ability to produce clean water which means today the City urged all residents to boil water before consuming. That’s is nuts. I’ve never seen anything like that here.

This certainly makes you think how fortunate we are to have clean water when there are so many in the world who don’t have easy access to it. I mean, I swear, it’s like the apocalypse here and we still have water we just need to be a bit more cautious and also remember to conserve it.

Anyway, I am reading but just haven’t made very much progress in some of my books and I think I may not complete my R.I.P. Challenge this year. I hope you are enjoying your R.I.P. reads or any other read and I will try to come back to this space soon. Have a great week!
