Perish

“The murder had taken place in the living room, which Maggie found odd. Bedrooms, kitchens, entryways, even garages tended to backlight the scenes of high emotion, not the always slightly generic area where the hottest debates tended to be about the location of the remote.”

Maggie Gardner, forensics expert, is called to a murder scene. She needs to investigate the brutal murder of Joanna Moorehouse, the founder of Sterling Financial. There is not a lot of evidence to suggest who could have killed Joanna and at the same time, there is little that Maggie can glean from the home about Joanna the person.

Detective Jack Renner is also on the scene of the crime. He and Maggie decide that to understand Joanna and hopefully find the killer they need to learn more about Sterling Financial and who would stand to gain by Joanna’s death.

It’s not easy to work with Renner as Maggie knows more about him than anyone else. As both work on the investigation another victim is found. On top of that, Maggie’s ex-husband who is also on the police force, is closing in on another case that could have dire consequences for Renner and Maggie. Can she re-direct his attention while also reminding Renner to uphold their agreement?

There’s some great tension between the main characters and like the previous book in this series, the author does her research well but sometimes gets a bit bogged down in the details. In this case, for example there is a lot more about financial crime details that I don’t think was necessary to advance the plot. One of the things that keeps me coming back to this series is the ever-present question of will Jack Renner’s secret be revealed and what will Maggie do. It’ll be interesting to see what the author has instore for these two.

New Books, New Month

Don’t you just love starting a new month with new books? I have two new books for my nightstand thanks to World Editions books. These two are thrillers by Dutch authors so I’m really excited to discover these authors. Here’s a bit more about the books:

Sleepless Summer by Bram Dehouck. From the book’s synopsis: Seasons come and go in provincial Blaashoek, where the town’s superficial harmony is upended by the arrival of a wind farm—a blessing for some, a curse for others. The irritating hum of the turbines keeps butcher Herman Bracke, known far and wide for his delicious ‘summer pâté,’ awake at night. He falls prey to a deadly fatigue and gradually loses control over his work, setting off a series of bloodcurdling events with fatal consequences for the townspeople.

Mr. Miller by Charles Den Tex. From the book’s synopsis: Mr. Miller is watching you. Michael Bellicher is working for a successful consultancy agency and has everything going for him. During a night spent at work, he witnesses something he should never have seen. Attempting to flee the tightening stranglehold of the conspirators, Michael finds himself tailed by the mysterious Mr. Miller, who seems to know almost everything about him.

I’m looking forward to enjoying these two. Have you heard of these books/authors? Which one would you be most interested in?

I hope you’ve all had a very good start to the month. I got to see one of my best friends this weekend so it was so nice to catch up with her. Now to get ready for the work week.

Month in Review

Isn’t this great street art? So colorful. We saw this in Rotterdam.

Anyway, time to do a wrap up of the month. July was definitely a good reading month thanks to vacation as I was able to read quite a bit. I finished seven books and although there are a couple I am already having a hard time remembering exact plot details, I know that I did enjoy them at the time. The books I read were:

Perish by Lisa Black. This is the third in the series and I did like it a lot.
Her Pretty Face by Robyn Harding
Murder on Trinity Place by Victoria Thompson. This is the 22nd installment of the Gaslight series. Definitely a cozy and not a lot happens but I’m feeling very invested in this series now.
The Body Lies by Jo Baker
How to Walk Away by Katherine Center
Swiss Vendetta by Tracee De Hahn
The Chestnut Man by Soren Sveistrup. My favorite of all the reads.

Now to look forward to a new month. I have a couple of books I’m juggling which are really good and I also have quite a few new books to tell you about. What are you looking forward to in August?
