Here I go again signing up for more challenges but I just have join Carl’s Once Upon a Time Challenge again. You see last year I threw caution to the wind, joined in and read books that I would normally not pick up. You know what the best part was? Some of those books I read were my favorites of the year!
Carl’s offered up several quests and I’ll go with the first one which requires five books read between March 21 and June 20. Here is my list and with some alternates.
- The Stolen Child by Keith Donohue
- Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison
- The Scent of Shadows by Vicki Pettersson
- A Gift Upon the Shore by M.K. Wren
- Coraline by Neil Gaiman
Alternates: The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood, Passage by Connie Willis, The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde, and I’d love to get a hold of the second book in the Dresden files series by Jim Butcher.
I still haven’t forgotten that I mentioned a couple of other challenges that I wanted to join. I’m still planning on those but just need to come up with some lists. Now that’s a fun project to work on over the weekend don’t you think?
I was really hoping you’d join in again this year. The Atwood book is one I remember reading about last year and it sounded so interesting. I look forward to your thoughts on it as well as your other reads.
I didn’t join last year but want to try this year. I’m just trying to figure out a list.
I have only read Coraline and The Penelopiad out of those, and both were really good. I hope you enjoy all your picks, and I look forward to your thoughts on them.
I have Penelopiad on my bookshelf — but I think I’ll try to tackle Weight first for the challenge.
Oh I loved The Stolen Child. Such a great book! And Coraline is very creepy. I made my husband listen to the audio version on the way to the beach one year and he even liked it. I can’t wait to see the movie!
I think I am going to join this challenge, too (it was the only one I actually finished last year!). I am contemplating my list of books and can’t decide wheter I’ll pick one book in each category or just read five of whatever. I have plenty of books left over from last year, too, so I don’t think I’ll have to buy anything. I’m enjoying seeing everyone’s lists, though. You’ll love Coraline. Even though I finished listening to it, I can’t bring myself to delete it from my player (I might have to listen again!).
Great list. I have read The Stolen Child & Coraline and enjoyed both immensely. And I may be choosing Eyre affair for our next book club selection. Hope you enjoy them
Do try and find time to read ‘The Eyre Affair’. I would love to know what you think of it.
Great list, Iliana! I’ve read The Scent of Shadows and Coraline and I’m sure you’ll enjoy reading them. Can’t wait to read all your reviews. 🙂
Have fun reading this weekend and making book decisions!
Your list looks great.
I have only a few days to finish my Q1 book for Chunkster. I must hurry.l
Loved The Penelopiad! It is still in my list of favorites!
Good choices. I read The Penelopiad last year and I quite liked it. I have also read Coraline, but that is it from your list. Some of the others I own but have not read. Not that that is surprising or anything!
Gift Upon the Shore is fantastic. I hope you enjoy it!
I never thought that The Eyre Affair would be considered fantasy, but I guess it would. It’s been sitting on my shelf forever – must read it soon! Great list!
Great list! I’ve read Coraline (actually listened to Neil Gaiman read it himself on audiobook. Terrific!), but haven’t read any of the others. They all sound good, so I’m looking forward to your reviews.
Coraline and the Eyre Affair are two of my favorites! Enjoy!
GREAT list! I really hope you like Coraline and The Stolen Child as much as I did.
Carl V. – Thank you for hosting it again! I’ve been looking forward to it and even had a tentative list all worked out for a while now 🙂
Tanabata – Yay, so glad you are joining this year. Can’t wait to see your list!
Nymeth – I remember you saying you really enjoyed Coraline. It sounds like such a great tale.
Dark Orpheus – I just heard about Weight too. That sounds really good. Maybe I’ll have to work it into my list somehow!
Heather – I think I first heard about The Stolen Child from you so it has been on my to read list for a while now 🙂
Danielle – Oh I can’t wait to read Corlaine. Although after you mentioned about listening to it, I may just have to see if my library has an audio version. That might be fun. Can’t wait to see your list!
Carey – Yay, glad to hear more good things about those books. I have heard a lot about The Eyre Affair and it does sound fun doesn’t it.
Ann Darnton – It was on my list last year and I didn’t get to it so hopefully I will this year. I need to!
Melody – I just started Scent of Shadows and it’s exactly what I was in the mood for today. Just pure entertainment!
jenclair – I love Margaret Atwood and I have a feeling this will be a wonderful book. I feel bad that I’ve had it sitting in my shelves forever too.
Isabel – Are you joining this challenge? I hope you do! My reading has been non-existent so far… I had family in town but they just left so tomorrow I’m planning to catch up on reading and blogging 🙂
Kailana – I know it’s crazy how many books sit on our shelves just waiting right? I am only choosing books I already own for this challenge.
Stefanie – I bought that book after you mentioned it. It sounded like such an interesting story so I hope I will get to it.
Stephanie – I’ve had it on my shelf forever and part of the reason I never got to it last year was because I couldn’t find it! The horror. I know where it is now 🙂
Robin – I really must get the audio then. I’ve only tried one audio book and that’s been a bit of a disappointment but it’s a non-fiction book and I think that’s the problem. I’ll look for this one though!
Sarah – Oh I’m so looking forward to these books. So many of you have enjoyed them!
Andi – I remember you recent review of The Stolen Child! It was excellent so I must read this book 🙂
Ahh..I see this challenge everywhere! Must…resist…more challenges!
I really like your list, most of those are on my TBR pile as well.
I haven’t read any of those on your list…which makes it awfully tempting to sign on for the challenge. Oh dear…
Great list. I hope you had a fun-filled, relaxing, book weekend!
Alisia – It is everywhere isn’t it?! You should join in – it’s useless to try and resist 😉
ravenous reader – I’ve had such a great time checking out people’s lists. I don’t read much in this genre so I feel like I’m discovering tons of new authors and titles.
Christine – The weekend was a bit crazy but fun 🙂
It is so fun reading everyone’s lists, but I groan slightly because the titles are so tempting. I know as read your reviews I’ll be adding some more to my list of TBRs.
Great list Iliana!! Loved Coraline and I have both Pettersson book and the Harrison book waiting for me to read someday!! This challenge is going to KILL my TBR!
booklogged – I know what you mean. Since I don’t read much in this genre I keep looking at everyone’s lists and adding more titles to look into. Not good – ha,ha…
stephanie – I remember your post on Corlaine. I think it’s one that I’ll really enjoy. I’m more than half way through the Pettersson book and I’m a bit meh on it. Oh well, it’s still fun to read outside of my comfort zone 🙂
