Aside from Sharp Objects, I’ve also got a couple of other books going on this week.
I’m almost done with Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto. This book seems so simple yet describes so beautifully the pain of losing a loved one. It would be easy to race through this book but I’ve enjoyed taking my time with it. This book will also count towards my Japanese Reading challenge.
My next book was not one I had planned to read just yet but as I’m in Dallas and plan to visit with one of my former book groups it ended up jumping ahead of others. The group is reading Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson, which was named one of the NYT best books of the year. Even though I’m only half way through the novel, I can see why. The book is a very intimate look at the memories of a 67-year-old man. I hope I can finish this in time for discussion but either way, I can’t wait to see what the group has to say about this one.
Finally, when I met with one of my friends last night we talked about the upcoming movie Watchmen and her husband recommended I read the book. He loaned me his copy and I had to steal a few glimpses into it. I think I’m really going to enjoy this graphic novel.
Of course I have a bunch of other books I can’t wait to read and some really exciting ARCs have come my way but I’ll tell you about those next post.
I’m reading Watchmen! Though very slowly because I barely have any reading time these days 🙁 But anyway, it’s so amazing so far. Alan Moore really is the excellent writer everyone always told me he was. I look forward to comparing notes with you!
I just read Kitchen! I loved it, although I suppose I did kind of race through it. But I read it during a leisurely bath, so it had all of my attention. I’ve noticed I’m most focused on my reading during baths, probably because there’s nothing else to distract me. 🙂
I need to read the Watchmen. It’s one of my husband’s favorite graphic novels. He’s very excited for the movie. I promised I’d give it a try!
I want to read Kitchen! And Watchmen sounds intriguing to me too! 🙂
I’m hoping to visit the Watchmen this year, too.
You’re starting 2009 in the right way: by reading so much.
Have fun in the Big D.
So many interesting books already – you’re having a great start to the year! 🙂
Nymeth – Oh isn’t it terrible when we lose some reading time? I feel like I hardly read anything over the holidays as I was busy with family. Good times but I so missed my quiet time with books 🙂 I’ll post more on Watchmen as I get further into it!
Eva – You are too funny. I can understand reading the book so quickly though – it is very readable and it’s short too. I did finish it and loved it. I’ll have to read your review 🙂
Linda – I definitely want to read the book before seeing the movie. I had heard about it before of course but hadn’t really been that interested in it until I saw the preview for the film! You’ll have to tell me what you think.
Melody – Kitchen is so good. I need to write up a review but will probably get to it next week. Have you read anything by Banana Yoshimoto? this is my second book by her.
Care – Yay! I’ll be looking forward to your notes on it.
Isabel – The Big D visit is going well aside from the fact that I have no internet access at my mom’s. At least I get to stop by my favorite library though when I check email and post 🙂 I promise to give you a call once I’m back home.
tanabata – I love it that they are all so different! I’m still a bit jealous though of all that book bounty you got 🙂
I didn’t get to *Out Stealing Horses* when my book group read it. I had it from the library, just never cracked the cover … I must have been consumed by another book (or three!). I’ll get to it one day …
No, I haven’t read anything by Banana Yoshimoto, yet, but I’m adding Kitchen to my wishlist now! 😉
Sounds like you are reading some good books! What fun! I look forward to what you think of The Watchman. I’ve been wondering about it.
I’ll be anxious to hear what you think of Kitchen. I liked it but didn’t love it. Actually, I’m not really sure if I liked it. Off to re-read my review!
Dawn – I do hope you’ll get back to it one day. It’s so good and totally caught me by surprise as I didn’t think it’d be something I’d really like that much.
Melody – Oh do! I don’t think you’d be disappointed 🙂
Stefanie – I had to put Watchmen aside because I had to finish Out Stealing Horses but I’ll jump back into it hopefully soon!
Les in NE – I didn’t love it but I really liked it. I would definitely read more by her. when I get a chance I’ll do my review and we’ll have to compare notes 🙂
I have a copy of Watchmen sitting here on my desk waiting to be read. It sure looks good, doesn’t it?
I’d love to read Out Stealing Horses. I’ve had my eye on that one for awhile.
