Remember yesterday I mentioned that I picked up the latest issue of BookPage at the library? Well, good times at Casa Bookgirl today because the mail brought the Nov/Dec issue of Bookmarks Magazine and the Spring 2008 catalog from Hesperus Press. Woot – talk about adding a lot of books to my wish list.
These are just some of the books that I’ll be watching out for:
- The Worst Thing I’ve Done by Ursula Hegi
- Ghost by Alan Lightman
- The Quiet Girl by Peter Hoeg
- Bitter Sweets by Roopa Farooki
- Away by Amy Bloom
- The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz
- Songs Without Words by Ann Packer
- Lazy Thoughts of a Lazy Girl by Jenny Wren
- The Pilgrims by Mary Shelley
- The Maytrees by Annie Dillard
This weekend I will go through these publications to see what else I might have missed. Other weekend plans involve a bit of a book hunt as I want to find The Owl Service for the next Slaves of Golconda discussion and I am also looking for a couple of other book group reads.
And, of course reading, I am half way through my last book for the R.I.P. II Challenge so I may just make it. Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!
I just realized the past selection of Slaves of Golconda is The Woman Who Waited. I heard about the book from Danielle. I just finished it and I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that real reasons (or all the circumstances) are not for some reasons made known.
I am interested in Ghost, Away, and The Maytrees. I read a few pages of the Dillard book at the bookstore…I’ll post the shopping list tomorrow. 🙂
Wow, you have lots of great sounding books on this list! Those magazines and catalogs are dangerous, aren’t they!
Matt – No way! You are too funny. I need to go check out your review on Makine. I didn’t join the Slaves this time because I had read one of his books before and I didn’t really like it so I wasn’t as motivated to try another. But, that’s all changing as from what I’ve read everyone has quite enjoyed The Woman Who Waited. Can’t wait to see your shopping list! 🙂
Tara – Very dangerous! :) I love getting all of them.
I don’t need Bookpage or Bookmarks Magazine now. Thanks, iliana!
jenclair – Ha,ha.. Glad you were able to add some books to your list too 🙂
I hope you will enjoy “Away” – I love the honesty in her writing – her characters are so recognisably human in their desires. Yet her writing is filled with such tenderness and skill. It is a quiet book, the way qualities like compassion and understanding is silent but keenly felt.
I’m abosrbed in Away the minute I started reading. I agree with Dark Orpheus! 🙂
Dark Orpheus – Oh my, that sounds really beautiful. I can’t wait to read it.
Matt – You got it already! I looked for it today but I couldn’t find it. I am trying to stay away from Amazon but I may not resist!
The books in the Hesperus catalogue that attracted me were the Virginia Woolf essays. I can’t get on with her fiction but I do enjoy the essays and to have half a dozen neatly package in a volume I can pop into a bag rather than the massive tomes I pick up from the University library is just too tempting.
I have a copy of the Maytrees in my library stack and hope to get to it this week. My husband read The Living and said it was fabulous, but I’ve never read anything by Annie Dillard. Is this your first by her, too?
Ann D. – I bet that would be a great read. I’ve only tried Mrs. Dalloway which I quite liked but have not read anything else by Woolf. Those Hesperus Press books are just too tempting aren’t they?
Les in NE – It would be my first too. I have heard some great things about the book and would love to get to it soon.
Hi Bookgirl,
I’m so glad you liked the catalogue; sounds like you’ve got a lot of reading ahead of you! You’ll be pleased to hear it’s a good few months until our next catalogue is released, so there’s plenty of time to get a headstart.
If I can interest anyone else in a copy of our catalogue, please do drop a line with a mailing address to enquiries AT hesperuspress DOT com.
Happy reading!
Ellie, Hesperus Press
Away is a wonderful book – it possibly may tie for my favourite book of the year.
You do choose the nicest books to read, Iliana! I’ve heard so many good things about “Away” , “Oscar Wao” and “Songs without Words”, so I think you will enjoy them. I would love to read “Bittersweets”, I saw it at Heathrow airport and picked it up but put it back at the last minute.
Ellie – Oh that is good to know 🙂 I hope others will contact you about the catalog. The books mentioned are really ones to keep in mind.
Jodie – Wow, so many good things I keep hearing about this book. I may not be able to wait to get it from the library!
Lotus – They sound good don’t they. Ah, I’ve had those moments when you put a book back and then wonder about it later.
