I got an automated email from my library today and three books I’ve requested are waiting for me. Yay! I’ve been very good so far this year as most of my reads are books from my stacks. A very difficult thing for me indeed as I pass by the library every day. I’m always tempted to stop in and see what’s new. Anyway, I think it’s time for a nice trip to the library don’t you think?
While I’m at the library I hope to find some poetry books in preparation for National Poetry Month. I spent some time this evening reading a few poems but couldn’t decide on one to post. I did find this quote over at Poets.org and I like it a lot.
“For poems are not, as people think, simply emotions (one has emotions early enough)Γ’β¬βthey are experiences.” ~ Rainer Maria Rilke
Poets.org also had a list of the Most Popular Poems of 2006. What do you think? Are any of these your favorites? I’m kind of loving the Gwendolyn Brooks poem right now. You can read the full text and listen to an audio clip on the site. Real cool.
So I hope everyone has a great weekend and next post I’ll let you know what goodies I found at the library.
I paid a visit to my library earlier this week – ended up bringing home four books and putting hold requests in for seven more – yikes! I’m a sucker for punishment …
Hope you get some great books and have a fabulous weekend!
I like most of these very much. It would be hard to choose, but I do love Auden’s Lullaby and James Wright’s A Blessing.
Library day for me tomorrow…if I have time. Have to call and renew if I don’t manage to get by ’cause this batch is due!
This month I stopped reserving at the library (to see if I could go a month – so far so good!). I’m planning on reading all my library books, and then starting on my own stacks. For some reason I don’t feel like hunting down anything new, maybe it’s the change of season.
Lesley – I guess it’s a good thing my library limits my holds (no more than 10) otherwise I would place more I’m sure π
Jenclair – Have fun at the library! I’ll pop over to your site and see what you got.
Lazy Cow – Now that’s willpower! I keep telling myself I need to read more from my stacks so new books can come in.
I wish I HAD a library. For some reason the library here sucks! Mostly have to get interlibrary loans because the libraries haven’t had new books since I swear the 80’s…
Same as you Kailana. Our local library is not well stocked. I depend mostly on purchases.
I like my own haiku. Hehe. I’ll check out the list later. Work is too busy right now.
I think “Still I Rise” is a very powerful poem and might top my list.
Library – heck, I haven’t had time to get to HP Books!
Have a great weekend…
Hi~I discovered your blog several days ago and it’s delightful to read.Love hearing about your date nights to the bookstore with your husband,as well as your friendships with others who love books. It’s also fun to read about your book purchases.I am jealous that you have a lot of places where you can get great deals on books, there isn’t a half-price book store near where I live, however,I am quite an expert on finding great deals at the book stores in my area,as well as ordering things online.
Oh! You just reminded me that I have I picked up a DVD that was on hold for me and I need to watch it this weekend. It’s a ballet. π
I’ve been getting a lot of magazines from the library lately.
Kailana – That’s terrible! What’s up with that? I don’t blame you for not wanting to visit often.
Gavin – I am quite lucky to have such a great library close by. We get so many new books every month. Still, trips to the bookstore are a must π
Isabel – I like your haikus too π
Christine – Get thee to HP this weekend chica! Have fun. Hmm, now I’m tempted to get out there too!
MLH – Thank you so much for your sweet comments. Isn’t it the best to find good book deals? Do you have a blog? Would love to “meet” another bookworm blogger π
Sassymonkey – I’m sure that’s not the only item you’ll be picking up either right? I need to see what kind of magazines my library has available for check out. I haven’t paid attention. Have fun watching the ballet!
Currently I just read a few blogs, and yours is one of the few I have in my “favorites”.I think it’s so thoughtful of you to respond to the comments that are posted. It demonstrates another characteristic of yours that readers find engaging!
I’m bad – I buy books, and rarely visit my library, even though the bookstore is 8 miles away, and the library is within walking distance.
I love Rilke, and you’ve reminded me that I need to read more poetry.
Several of these rank among my own favourites – I’m so glad to see Maya Angelou up there twice! She is such an inspiration. I’ve never read the Gwendolyn Brooks poem before, but what an effective poem. Thanks for sharing!
While I do love the Dylan thomas poem listed, and Frost is always a favorite, I think I like Langston Hughs’ poem “The Negro Speaks of Rivers.” It has such a beautiful spiritual element to it with the repetition of ‘I’ve known rivers” and “My soul has grown deep like the rivers.” Beautiful!
Have fun at the library π
‘Somewhere I have never travelled’ has always been one of my favourite cummings’ poem, but then I love almost everything he wrote.
I wish I had your discipline. I promise myself repeatedly that I will read from my TBR pile and not call in the library every time I pass, but I never manage it. It doesn’t help, of course, that I walk past the library twice a day on my way to and from work!
I need to be better this year and just concentrate on my own stacks–at least primarily. I do have a few things on my library want list (but I am pretty far down in the line on all of them). It is so tempting to leave with a stack of books, so I have been trying to steer clear of the library for a while. Is April National Poetry month? In honor I will try and read at least one book of poetry, I think. I can’t seem to motivate myself to read poetry, but I bet I would like it if I got in the habit.
MLH – Thank you – you made my day π
Melissa – Well, even though I check out a lot of books I still buy a lot too. It’s a madness π
Max – I agree those Angelou poems are so inspiring.
Stefanie – I definitely need to read more Hughes. What few poems I’ve read of his have always left me in awe.
Ann – That’s me too. I pass by the library on my way to and from work every day. How can I not stop right? I’ve been trying.
Danielle – Yes, April is National Poetry Month – yay! I am going to try and read one book of poetry too.
I wish I lived near a good library or passed one every day! I haven’t been good because I haven’t read much. Naughty me! Haha!
Anyway, would you be interested in a link exchange? =)
I could barely keep up with the ones I checked out so I stop reserving anything–not to mention I had to hurl the books up the hill with me since parking is a nightmare here in the city.
Josette – If I ever move I think that may be the thing I miss the most (aside from friends of course) π
Matt – Oh bad parking situations would keep me away. My library even has underground parking which if you live in Texas during the summer that’s about as close to bliss as you can get. hee, hee.
