I’m still very much enjoying spooky reads but I’m already looking forward to November reads and there are several reading projects around the blogosphere that sound so interesting to me that I have to join in. First up is Nonfiction November hosted by five wonderful bloggers who are going to inspire us to read more nonfiction.
Each week there is a prompt to get the discussion going and there’s even an instagram post challenge every day. Get your pencils ready to take note of all the books you’ll be adding to your wish list right?
I don’t know if I’ll be able to participate in the weekly prompts but I’m looking forward to being inspired to read more nonfiction. It has not been a great year for nonfiction reading for me. Not that I read a lot of nonfiction to begin with but this year I’ve only read one nonfiction book so far, which was The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert. I thought it was such a fascinating read.
Now we get to the other exciting part, what are my list of potential reads? I have a few nonfiction books on my shelves but these are the ones that are calling my name:
The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
The Devil’s Highway by Luis Alberto Urrea
The Radium Girls by Kate Moore
Have you read any of these? If you were going to pick up one which one would you choose?
And, you did catch that I said there were other reading projects I want to join in right? Don’t worry I’ll tell you more about those soon. But what about you? Are you joining Nonfiction November or any other reading project next month?
I read The Glass Castle many years ago and thought it was very good. There’s a movie out based on the memoir, as well. I think Woody Harrelson is in it. (I saw it, but don’t remember the cast details too well). I have a copy of Radium Girls on my shelf, but haven’t read it yet. My book group just discussed it in September, but I was traveling. I’ve been interested in The Devil’s Highway ever since I read American Dirt. I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts! Have fun with the challenge. I’ve already jumped the gun and started one of my books this afternoon. 😉
I read Half-broke Horses by Jeannette Walls several years ago, but haven’t read anything else by her. I loved Into the Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea (fiction but so good) several years ago and would be interested in the nonfiction The Devil’s Highway.
I did a read/listen combination of Radium Girls a few years ago… so interesting! There were a lot of characters and details, and I think the audio helped me through. There is also a movie (or tv series?) that I caught on one of the streaming services.
The Glass Castle was a book club selection years ago, shortly after it was released. I thought it was disturbing and was angry with the parents. I remember giving my hardcover copy to another group member who was not able to get a copy in time… told her I didn’t want it back. Guess I have gotten more used to this type of memoir over the years…
I participated in NonFiction November for the first time last year, but this year I have my hands full with admin stuff. Not to mention, the reading/ blogging blues. But I’d probably pick up the Devil’s Highway first — that title and that cover, both so striking. There’s also a reading challenge called Novellas in November, see if you’d like to try that too.
Lesley in OR – I think I must have missed that there was a movie version! Which of course now I’d like to check out but first the book right? I’m really curious about The Radium Girls but it’s a bit of a chunkster. I’ve had The Devil’s Highway for a while but I think I’ve put it off as I do read a lot of stories about immigrants from south of the border and it’s just heartbreaking to see the situations so many are in. This is probably the book that may have been on my shelf the longest so I need to get to it! Can’t wait to hear what you’ve already started – I promise I won’t tell 🙂
Jen Mullen – I have read another book by Luis Alberto Urrea (also fiction) which was wonderful. I actually was lucky enough to see him read at a book signing and he was so engaging. I feel bad that I haven’t read this book yet as I was so excited when I got it!
Joann@Gulfside Musing – Oh I didn’t know there was a series about it. Will have to resist the urge to watch it before reading the book. So I need to keep a notepad with me to take notes on all the characters huh? 🙂 I think that’s why I’ve stayed away from The Glass Castle. I went through a period of really depressing memoirs and I needed a break that’s for sure.
Lex @ Lexlingua – I’m sorry you’ve got a bit of the blogging/reading blues. It happens to all of us. I go crazy and join all challenges but half of the time I may only read one book but it’s still fun. Yes, the cover of that book is striking isn’t it? And, yes, Novellas in November is another reading event I’d like to do. See, I told you 🙂
Probably you’ve already decided which book to read, but I loved The Radium Girls! It was a fascinating story and it seems like the events it covers helped improve worker protections, so it still felt very relevant. I’ve not read The Color of Law but I’d really like to 🙂
I’ve not had a great year for reading in general, so I am looking forward to getting back into it this month too!
