I think all weekends should be long don’t you think? By the time you run your errands, do your chores and maybe get in one night of fun, your weekend is over, whereas, if you have just that one extra day the possibilities of what to do with it are endless.
I spent my extra day this holiday weekend in McKinney, Texas. It’s only about a 30-minute drive from Dallas but I’m always too busy or something comes up, and another opportunity to explore a new place has vanished. Not so this weekend.
McKinney has more than 3375 historic structures and its historic downtown boasts boutiques, galleries and lots of antique shops, and I intended to discover some of these treasures myself.
One of my favorite places was My Spiritual Garden. This shop has home decorations, candles and other kinds of gifts but the best part is hidden in the back. Enclosed in a glass structure is a labyrinth mapped out on the floor. The purpose of walking a labyrinth is to walk a path of prayer. You can walk it on your own or do a guided walk.
I didn’t do the labyrinth walk but I was there for an early morning yoga class. Surrounded by candles our small group concentrated on the poses and asanas. I waked out feeling alive and excited about the day. I don’t know if it was the labyrinth, the class or simply letting go of that “to-do” list and just enjoying the day.
Check out the Footnotes Section if you want to read/see more about my day of fun. In the meantime, I’m going to use up the rest of this long weekend by doing lots of reading. I’ve got mysteries, chick lit, magazines and some award-winning fiction waiting for me.
