I haven’t forgotten that I need to tell you about my recent book buys, and I’ve also received a few new ARCs so I need to make room on the shelves for the new books.
I had to go back for the Barnes & Nobles Classics sale and found three books I had to have and these are chunksters. I got Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray, Villette by Charlotte Bronte and Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell. Have you read these?
My other book buy was Manservant and Maidservant by Ivy Compton-Burnett which is the July read for the Slaves of Golconda. I’m really looking forward to this one.
I’ve also recieved some ARCs that I’m quite excited about:
- Driven to Ink by Karen E. Olson. I’ve really enjoyed Karen’s series featuring a tattoo artist. The books are fun and fast-paced. It’ll be great to see what Brett and her team are up to this time around.
- Keep Sweet by Michele Dominguez Greene
- This Is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper
- Virgin Widow by Anne O’Brien
- Hannah’s List by Debbie Macomber
- The Case of the Man Who Died Laughing by Tarquin Hall.
- The Poet Prince by Kathleen McGowan.
So many books, I don’t even know where to start.

Happy reading, Iliana! You’ve gotten some great books there! I’ve Villette in my pile too… just haven’t around to reading it yet. 😉

You’re reminding me of great holiday reads with this post. I read both Vanity Fair and Wives on Daughters on different holidays. I read Villette as a teenager after loving Jane Eyre so much. Happy Reading.
Love Vanity Fair! I’ve been itching to read some Ivy Compton-Burnett, so I look forward to hearing your thoughts. And I have the same problem you do about where to start, so I just read ’em all in the order I get ’em. 😉
I’ve read Vanity Fair and really enjoyed it. You have some good reading to look forward to! And thanks for reminding me that I need to stop by the library to pick up the Slaves book!
OMG is B&N having their classics sale??? I love/hate that sale! Guess I better get over there! lol Looks like you have a bunch of lovely new friends to get to know. I just love book shopping…
Hope you enjoy the book!
Melody – I know how that goes. We’ll have to share our notes on Villette when we finally get to it 🙂
Veens – Thank you! I’m hoping to spend some time organizing the bookshelves this weekend. Should be fun!
Joan Hunter Dunn – Oh that’s wonderful. I tend to save some of my chunky classics to read on vacation. I think having the extra time to read and just being relaxed helps for a memorable experience!
Tiffany – It’s like I want to start them all but know that would be dangerous. I’d probably never finish one! haha.
Stefanie – I tried to find the Slaves book at our library but no luck. I’m glad I got the NYRB copy though – I really like how those books look on the shelf 🙂
Heather – Well, I don’t know if it’s still going on but they started it maybe a week or two ago. You gotta run over there 🙂
Karen Olson – Thank you so much for sending me a copy. I have a feeling I’m in for a good time 🙂
I read Wives and Daughters last year (finished it on the first day of this year) and really enjoyed it. The film was good, too. Your classics all sound good and I’d like to read Tarquin Hall as well–will have to check out the other titles now.
I really enjoyed all three of the classics you got. Villette, Vanity Fair, and Wives and Daughters–all very entertaining. I think Gaskell is underrated, by the way. Let me know what you think!
I have heard that This is Where I Leave You is awesome! I have it on my shelves but of course, well, you know. Apparently they are making a movie?!
I have read Villette and remember enjoying it though it’s been years since I’ve read it. Those all sound great. Have fun!
Great books Iliana. So many books, so little time 🙂 I love the classics, especially those chunksters you can really get into. happy reading.
I just downloaded Vanity Fair on my nook recently! I can’t wait to read it, though the size is kinda scary.
Enjoy your new books, Iliana!
Danielle – I thought I remembered you having read it! I just got the DVD for my mom and we are going to try and watch it sometime soon. I’m looking forward to it but the book is such a chunkster!
Gentle Reader – This has got to be the year I read Gaskell. I think it was thanks to book blogging that I heard about her and when readers mention her books they totally sound like stories I would like. Now if only I can get to them!
Sandy – Oh no, a movie? Well, I better hurry up and read the book first!
jrav – I can’t wait to start one of them although I’m sort of tempted to put off my classic until we go on vacation. That way more uninterrupted time to devote to such a big book 🙂
bookworm – I know right! I do like big stories like this it’s just that in recent years I think I’ve really shied away from chunksters because of time. Well, there never is enough time right so I need to just dive in 🙂
andi – Oh yay, we were on the same wavelength!
vanity fair and Gaskell’s book are on my wishlist.
Vilette was a great read and I really enjoyed it. Happy reading to you!
I really enjoyed Vanity Fair- don’t be put off by its chunkster status. It may also help if you watch the BBC series too (haven’t seen the movie). Villette is on my TBR pile, have heard some good reviews. I love how classic reading in coming back into vogue!
Happy reading!
I wish you luck on your chunksters. I have decided to read two classics this summer, but haven’t decided which yet. I should probably do a survey. LOL
Any suggestions?
Your new ARC with the title “The Case of the Man Who Died Laughing” is one fantastic title. Don’t you think?
So many books I haven’t heard about yet! I have Vanity Fair on my shelf–have for too long. Was thinking someone needs to host a readalong for it!
I have all three of those chunksters — just got Wives and Daughters from PBS. Vanity Fair and Villette have been waiting for quite an embarrassing length of time. So, I haven’t read any of them. And, I haven’t heard of any of your ARCs, except for the Jonathan Tropper. I loved his first book but haven’t managed to read any more (yet).
Looks like you have a lot of great reading ahead of you. Enjoy!
