I went to my Murder on Mondays book group tonight even though I hadn’t read the book (The Blue Edge of Midnight). It seemed that either people loved it or hated it. I don’t know if I’ll read it as I already heard how it ends but I do know I am looking forward to our next selections.
In November we’ll read Murphy’s Law by Rhys Bowen. I love historical mysteries so this one already sounds good to me. For December we have Hercule Poirot’s Christmas by Agatha Christie. In December we always try to read something with a Christmas theme and we also bring treats. I need to bribe one of my best friends who also goes to my book group to make an extra treat and I can take it. I don’t want to poison my book group members with any of my cooking – talk about a Murder on a Monday!
Last night I started reading The Dirty Duck by Martha Grimes. I realize this year I’ve been reading fewer mysteries and I miss them. Then again, I’ve been discovering some new genres and that’s been fun so I shouldn’t complain. Basically, there’s never enough time for all the reading I want to do.
But speaking of mysteries has everyone seen The Literate Kitten’s new Horror Short Story Challenge? I’m joining in. It’s so easy and I love scary stories so I can’t say no. I still haven’t decided which story/stories I want to read but they will either come from my B&N edition of The Essential Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe or The Mammoth Book of Victorian & Edwardian Ghost Stories. I would like to read two or three so I will post more on my choices soon.
I read MURPHY’S LAW a couple of months ago and really liked it. In fact, I’ve got the rest of the Murphy series on order.
OCR is probably doing Queene’s Christmas (that is where the voting has lead) for November/December and it is quite a good mystery so that might be something you’d enjoy. The Mammoth Book sounds good!!!
Both The Essential Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe or The Mammoth Book of Victorian & Edwardian Ghost Stories sound perfect for the challenge as well October’s Halloween holiday!
I haven’t read many mysteries this year either and I miss them. I think there have just been too many challenges and other distractions, which are of course wonderful in their own right, but I tend to get away from my usual books. I’ll have to look for that Victorian/Edwardian anthology–that sounds wonderful. I am going to read the Du Maurier story and some others as well–not sure which. I’ve been enjoying reading ghost stories for the last month or so–they really are addictive.
Victorian/Edwardian sounds right up my alley.
I can’t wait to see what you read, and anything you recommend.
I’m getting all spine-tingly already!
Lynne – Ooh good to hear that! I’m such a fan of historical mysteries that I am always on the look out for a new series to try so I think this one will be fun.
Heather – Thanks for the info on Queene’s Christmas. We thought we had run out of christmas-themed mysteries!
Christine – They sound great don’t they. I always try to read The Raven every Halloween. Perfect!
Danielle – Exactly! I love discovering the new genres and joining the challenges but mysteries a bit of my comfort reads so I can tell I’ve missed them. I really want to read at least two so maybe I’ll chose one from each book.
LK – Thank you for getting us all in a spooky mood! 🙂
I’m going to be leading a mystery book club soon, I need to get my butt in gear and get everything started. We’re calling ourselves The Literary Autopsy.
Erin – I love the name of your book group! So are you guys going to read any type of mysteries? We try all as long as it’s mysteries. Our one rule is that we have to start with the first in the series, which works great for me because that’s how I like to read series mysteries – in order! Have fun with your book group and hope you’ll post about it.
