Some of our regular members weren’t able to make it to book group so we had a smaller showing last night but still enjoyed a good discussion on Ghost Medicine by Aimée and David Thurlo.
We gave thumbs up for setting and thought there were some interesting story aspects but overall the book was not a standout for us. I’ll share more of my thoughts on this one later on. I still have quite a few book reviews to write up but you know how that goes.
Anyway on the topic of mysteries I was reading the latest issue of Mystery Scene magazine and of course have added a bunch of mysteries to my reading list. Here are just a few that I want to share. Let me know if you’ve read any of these:
The Black Hour by Lori Rader-Day
A Murder of Magpies by Judith Flanders
The City of Blood by Frédérique Molay
The Hollow Girl by Reed Farrel Coleman
The Accidental Alchemist by Gigi Pandian
Finally, the one mystery I’m really excited about is the latest Maisie Dobbs book, A Dangerous Place. I saw this on the shelves at B&N yesterday and was very tempted by it. I love that series.
So how about you, what mysteries are on your list?
I used to have a subscription to Mystery Scene and enjoyed it very much. Wonder why I let that lapse? Anyway, I’m planning on reading The Black Hour. And I’ve heard some good things about the Magpie mystery.
I think I read one of Thurlo’s mystery series many years ago, but I can’t quite remember. Might be getting it mixed up with Margaret Coel. Sorry that one didn’t work all that well for the group. Some are like that. We’re delving into Greg Iles country at our next meeting – Natchez Burning.
I’ve been reading lots of good reviews on A Murder of Magpies so that’d be on my wishlist. And the other books you mentioned sound great too! Hope you enjoy reading them all. 🙂
I enjoyed A Murder of Magpies! And I really liked the gargoyle in The Accidental Alchemist.
I didn’t even know there was such a magazine as this! Thanks for bringing it to my attention. 🙂
It’s been ages since I last read a Mystery Scene magazine. Both A Murder of Magpies and The City of Blood are on my wishlist too.
Must check out those books–I have heard of the Flanders but the rest are new to me. I like browsing Mystery Scene magazine–a little dangerous to look out. I seem to be reading a lot of mysteries at the moment–including the newest Maisie Dobbs–I couldn’t help myself and caved in and bought. Since I am actually reading it (and not just setting it on a pile of books somewhere) I don’t feel too guilty!
