I really didn’t want to go to the library this week but I had a couple of holds waiting for me that were about to expire, and well we can’t have that can we? So more new books to add to my stacks. So here’s what I got:
Alive at the Center is a poetry collection of contemporary poems from the pacific northwest. I like this from the back cover: “it’s a cultural conversation between urban centers whose unique perspectives share a common landscape.”
Carnival by Rawi Hage is the story of a taxi driver in a crime-ridden apocalyptic metropolis. Along the way he meets a book-loving passenger. This sounds totally quirky. Anyone read this?
The Sudden Disappearance of the Worker Bee by Serge Quadruppani. A mystery featuring Commissario Simona Tavianello. I love a good Italian mystery.
Lost by S.J. Bolton. Lacey Flint is becoming one of my favorite characters from a mystery series. I must know what she is up to in this, the third book in the series.
Calling Dr. Laura by Nicole J. Georges. I haven’t read very many graphic novels in the past couple of years and I do enjoy them so this one was a hold I placed after looking for some recently published graphic novels.
So that’s the latest haul. Now I need to get back to my current reads which I’ll tell you about soon.
These look like they will be good. I’m curious about Calling Dr. Laura. S.J. Bolton is an author I’d really like to try at some point. And Carnival, which I’ve never heard of, sounds like it might be fun. I will await your thoughts on it on pins and needles. 🙂
I want to know if you like the GN. I love them in general. I’m reading one now by Joe Sacco called “Palestine”. It is amazing, and very intense.
Oh, I loved, loved, loved Carnival. There are some delightfully bookish bits. The story itself is a little discomfiting at times, and the characters challenge the reader in some ways, but it is incredibly well-written and the characterization is consistently credible and dynamic. His fiction is top-notch.
I”ve been feeling the itch to read some graphic novels. It’s been too long. Funny how some reading habits cycle, isn’t it.
Hope you find a favouite here!
Enjoy your haul!
I know just how you feel! I have five books to pick up myself, but I am putting it off as one has a line of people waiting for it so I can’t renew and I am trying to finish a couple of other books before starting yet another–doing the book juggling thing as you can see! I want to read the Italian mystery, too, and have just requested Carnival from ILL….. lots of good reads in your pile! (Oh, I have Lost out from the library right now, too!).
Sorry–that comment above was mine–I hit the post button too quickly–I am surprised it let the comment post without a name! Sorry about that.
You must read Lost! Oh my goodness, it is the best book of the series so far in my opinion! I LOVE this series (can you tell? Lol!) These all look good. Enjoy your library finds!
Literary Feline – I highly recommend Bolton and hope you’ll get a chance to check out her books one of these days. I’ll keep you posted on the graphic novel!
Sandy – Did you mention that on your blog or FB? I think I heard you talk about it. Looking forward to your review!
Buried In Print – Oh I’m so glad you recommend it! The premise sounds really cool and offbeat. I just I can read it before it’s due back at the library. And, yes, reading cycles are so interesting. There are times all I want comfort books and then I turn to noir and before you know it, it’s all poetry 🙂
Kailana – I’m sure I will 🙂
Danielle – No problem! Get this, I got an email today about another hold. I’m totally going to wait until the last minute possible before picking it up. I need to make a dent in some of these! haha… I’m hoping I can fit in the Italian mystery as it looks like a pretty slim novel. Can’t wait to hear what holds you have waiting for you!
Samantha – I know I remember reading your review! I have to finish my book club book first otherwise I know I’ll put all others aside once I start this one 🙂
