Because I want to focus a bit more on my reads I haven’t been accepting as many ARCs lately. Granted, sometimes some of those come without being requested and it’s very nice of course but they may just have to wait a bit longer on the nightstand.
I do want to share with you some of the ARCs I’m especially thrilled about though.
First, is The Missing Ink by Karen E. Olson. I really enjoyed Karen’s Annie Seymour series and can’t wait to read this one which is the start of her new Tattoo Shop mystery series. A postcard came with the ARc which has the cover art for the book and it’s quite cool. Not only that, but I’m happy to host Karen during her blog tour in July.
Next is More Than It Hurts You by Darin Strauss. From the back cover: Strauss’s extraordinary novel is set in a world turned upside down – where doctors try to save babies from their parents, police use the law to tear families apart, and the people you think you know best end up surprising you the most.
Then I got a book from a new to me publisher, Other Press. I’ve just briefly looked through their catalog and am already adding more books to my list but first, I’ll get to read The Unit by Ninni Holmqvist. This dystopian novel takes the reader to a world where women over fifty and men over sixty who are childless, and do not contribute in ways deemed productive for society, are designated as “dispensable,” and are expected to contribute in other ways. They are taken to a special reserve bank for physical and psychological experiments. Being that my husband and I are childless I am at once curious and a bit anxious to read this one.
So, I’ve got some interesting reading ahead of me don’t you think? What about you? What ARCs/books have you received lately that you are excited about?
Oh and don’t forget my giveaway. I’ll post the winners sometime later on Friday.
The Unit is already intrigued me too 🙂
Looking forward to your reviews 🙂
I’m really looking forward to reading Karen E. Olson’s book which is to be out soon!
The Unit sounds intriguing to me so I might want to check that one out as well.
I received a review copy titled The Sinful Life of Lucy Burns by Elizabeth Leiknes lately and I can’t wait to dive into it!
Wow. Those sound like little rollercoaster rides! There was a time in my life when my husband and I didn’t think we could have kids, and it was a pretty tough time for us. If I were in that situation, I’m not sure I’d want to read about being dispensable! I have so many books I want to read personally, I could not accept an ARC for the next two years. I will never catch up!
I would be a candidate for the Unit, too – scary!
Veens – Doesn’t it sound good? I can’t wait to start it!
Melody – I’m so curious how the new character will compare to Annie you know. I haven’t heard of the Leiknes book you got but I like that title 🙂
Sandy – Oh I cannot imagine reading a book like that one and going through such a difficult situation. And, you know, I have enough TBR books to last me a couple of years but I keep buying and accepting more books – it’s madness 🙂
Care – I know, I’m going to be freaking out when I read it 🙂
Oh, some good books you have to look forward to! Can’t wait to hear about them, especially Missing Ink since I am fond of tattoos, and The Unit since I don’t have children either!
More Than it Hurts You sounds like one I might like; great post!
I got a few ARC’s that I will be reviewing in August and am really looking forward to reading – The Plight of the Darcy Brothers by Marsha Altman, The Magicians by Lev Grossman and Apples and Oranges by Marie Brenner. They all look like really good reads!
It definitely sounds like you have some great reading ahead of you!
Stefanie – Ah, that’s right you’ve got some don’t you? You know, you’d love it here in Austin. It seems like everyone has a tattoo except for me 🙂 I hope The Unit doesn’t cause nightmares – haha…
Diane – Sounds like a good drama doesn’t it? I’m looking forward to it!
Stephanie – I’ve been meaning to read something by Lev Grossman for a while now. And, I wasn’t very fond of Apples & Oranges but hopefully you’ll like it better than I did! Have fun with your ARCs 🙂
Nymeth – Don’t they all sound good? I can’t wait to dive in. Granted I’m still enjoying my other reads a lot so no rushing allowed 🙂
So glad you received the ARC. I wish I had finished books to send out, but I’ve only got one so far. It looks fantastic!
And I made a huge effort not to have Brett compare at all with Annie. She is a totally different character. Can you even imagine Annie getting a tattoo?
I’ve got The Unit and hope to start on it soon. I love dystopian novels. This has been one of those bizarre arrival weeks, book-wise. It’s amazing that I haven’t been killed by them. You probably saw yesterday’s post about the 9 books I got in one day. Today’s windfall:
The Richest Man in Town by W. Randall Jones (a drawing win)
Sacred Hearts by Sarah Dunant (from Random House)
Hugh and Bess by Susan Higginbotham (Sourcebooks)
Do-Over by Robin Hemley and
The Unlikely Disciple by Kevin Roose (both from Hatchette)
Those sound like some great reads. I’ve mostly avoided ARCs. I feel guilty if I don’t have time to read them. They are hard to resist though.
The Unit and More than it Hurts You sound like great reads. I stopped accepting ARCs a while ago. I only accept the ones I really want to read. If only I can stop putting books on hold at the library, I’ll be okay. =) Happy reading!
I’m curious about The Unit – I read a great review of it recently. I am excited to read Sarah Dunant’s new book and a memoir I scored, This Lovely Life.
I’ve pretty much stopped taking AREs as well. I might take the occasional one, but I hope to get caught up over the summer and enjoy my own reading for a while! (Not that AREs aren’t my own reading, but you know what I mean). And I also want to read The Unit.
