It’s time to wrap up another month. I’m happy to report that August was a much better reading month and overall a good month. I am getting back into blogging a bit more. I got a chance to visit with one of my best friends who was in town, my mom is continuing to make progress and the 100+ temps we experienced for 68 days of the summer are now gone! It’s still hot but hopefully we’ve seen the last of those temps.
Anyway, let’s talk books. I finished 6 books in August, two of which were carryovers from July. Those carryovers were, Everything We Didn’t Say by Nicole Baart and The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman.
For August I challenged myself to only read translated books written by women for Women in Translation Month. I read four books: Elena Knows by Claudia Piñeiro, translated by Frances Riddle; Bonjour Tristesse by Françoise Sagan, translated by Diane Johnson; The Golden Cage by Camilla Läckberg, translated by Neil Smith; and The Nakano Thrift Shop by Hiromi Kawakami, translated by Allison Markin Powell.
I enjoyed most of the books but Elena Knows was definitely the standout. An amazing story that I’ve continued to think about and I encourage you to check it out if you haven’t yet.
I’m excited about a new month and hopefully being able to go outdoors a bit more and enjoy nature and books. I’ve also already got my eye on  the most awaited reading event of the fall – spooky season anyone? I hope you guys had a great month and lots of good books. Let me know if you had any 5-star reads or what you thought of your reading month.
I added Elena Knows to my library list. I’m glad you are getting back to more fun enjoyable activities and that the 100 degree temps are gone. Hope September is a good month for you.
I read a couple of reviews for Elena Knows over on Goodreads and it sounds like one I might enjoy.
Thank goodness your heat is abating. Finally!
Glad your mom is improving and doing well.
Enjoy these final weeks of summer, Iliana!
Diane – I really hope you get a chance to read it. I had read several of her other novels which were also good. We’re supposed to have some rainy weather this weekend and I’m hoping that cools off things a bit more. Happy September!
Lesley – It is really such an interesting read because the whole story takes place in a day and I always like when a writer can pull that off. And, yes, there is something so hopeful about nicer weather isn’t there?
I’m glad August was a good reading month and that your mom is doing better. It’s been a hot August here also but now the temps are changing which is really nice. Elena Knows sounds interesting. Happy reading for September! My favorite book I finished in August was a collection of letters to his wife by Ulysses Grant.
So glad August brought improvements on several fronts…. especially happy to hear you mom is doing better. Elena Knows sounds like a good read and I just found the ebook available on hoopla! My 5-star August read was Remarkably Bright Creatures. I especially loved the audio version. Happy September!
Bookworm – Thank you! Isn’t it wonderful to welcome a new season? We are still experiencing a lot of upper 90s so still very hot but as long as the 100+s are over then at least there is that! Hope you find some great reads this month!
Joann @ Gulfside Musing – Thank you! I hope you love Elena Knows. I’m still thinking about it and it’s really is a quick read if you have time available.. I really enjoyed your review of Remarkably Bright Creatures and want to read it!
