Fall has arrived – yay! While I love to see photos of fall foliage and the idea of sweater-weather and all that, the reality is that for us in central Texas, what we can look forward to is at least temperatures that are more bearable.
In my city that also typically means a lot of fun events but thanks to the pandemic who knows if I’ll feel comfortable to go to any of them. Luckily the Texas Book Festival is doing some virtual events so I’m happy about that.
Now when it came to books I didn’t finish as many as I would have liked but I read some great books. I read: The Crying Child by Barbara Michaels, The Haunting of Maddy Clare by Simone St. James and The Fortnight in September by R. C. Sherrif.
Two of my books were for Readers Imbibing Peril. I loved them and will hopefully get some write ups on both soon. I plan to continue with some reads for this as I love spooky books and I’m sure to watch a scary movie for Halloween. Of course, I’ll mix it up with some other reads.
For example, I did start reading The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas to celebrate Freedom to Read. I’m really glad to finally be reading this book. It’s very good. I wanted to do a catch up post on my reading challenges but it’s been a long day so I’ll save that for another time.
I hope you had a great reading month and would love to hear what was your favorite read.
The Haunting of Maddy Clare was such an amazing book, so glad you enjoyed it too. I’ve liked all of James’ books so far. As for The Hate U Give, I haven’t read the book but I’ve heard the movie adaptation is pretty good too, will try it out one of these days.
The cooler weather here has been a blessing. Our fall means temps in the 80’s and that is so much better than they were that we all act differently and with more energy. Unfortunately, fall foliage this year looks more brown than colorful–summer was hard on trees and plants locally.
Braiding Sweetgrass was my favorite “read” in September, although it was an audio book I started at the end of August.
Hope you get to enjoy some fall doings around Austin, and nice to hear that the book festival will over some virtual events!
It’s a good time of year for spooky reads. I just finished reading Deception Cove by Owen Laukkanen which I totally loved. Happy reading this month! 😀
Glad to hear that you enjoyed the books you’ve read this month, Iliana. I have had a great time with my reading in September. I have found that I pair a print book with the audio of same and keep ‘reading’ while I take my walks. The temps here in Kerrville are just a little cooler than in Austin and the humidity is usually lower by quite a bit. I’m liking that a lot. A lot of the local events and festivals are being held this year and many of them are held outside. I’m looking forward to the chalk festival in a couple of weeks. I’m hoping to take pictures and share with everyone on my blog. Happy October!
I am not in a good concentrating mood, so I am watching documentaries on Youtube from Timeline. Very informative. I am trying to be outside more. The weather is lovely.
October is my favorite month and yes love the darker reads that tend to go with October for as well. Simone St. James last book The Sun Down Motel was awesome and can’t wait for her new one coming soon. Have a great month.
I read The Hate U Give a few years ago and thought it was exceptional. My review can be found here.
I can’t believe October is here already! I was telling my husband the other day that the time seems to fly by especially since the pandemic started. I think it has to do with staying at home most of the times; well it definitely helps with my reading, ha. I’ve not read The Hate U Give but have heard a lot of good things about it. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts of it!
Lex @ Lexlingua – I am so glad to hear you’ve enjoyed Simone’s other books too. I’m really excited to discover others. And, I think I forgot about the film version of The Hate U Give. I would certainly check that out.
Jen Mullen – I know what you mean. That freeze we had really did a number on so much of our plants. Every time I go around the neighborhood I see so many succulents that just didn’t make it. We have/had a beautiful one in our front yard which we have to get rid of soon. But yes, so grateful for the nicer temps! I really want to read Braiding Sweetgrass. Sounds so wonderful.
Lark – I’ve never read any of his books but I’m almost positive I have a couple of them on my wishlist – as usual of course!
Kay – That’s a great idea and I can imagine it makes for a great reading experience! That’s great that you have less of the humidity in Kerriville and it sounds like you’re fitting right in already volunteering and being part of a book group! Can’t wait to see pictures from the chalk festival. How fun!
Isabel – I know what you mean. I’m glad you are experiencing good weather now and can enjoy some time outdoors! Let me know if there are some good YouTube channels you enjoy.
Diane – I know right? It’s like those darker books are just meant to be read this month. I have at least three other books by Simone St. James so I’m excited about that!
Lesley in OR – I still have not finished it. Unbelievable but it is really good. I promise to check out your review once I finish it.
Melody – For me this year has really flown by. I’m so tired of the pandemic and sometimes just feel like it’s never going to end. But there have been some good things for sure. I’m so grateful I’ve been able to work from home. That’s great you’ve had more reading time! 🙂
