It’s Friday night and the weekend begins, yay. We just got back from spending a bit of time at BookPeople. I had so much fun checking out the fiction and magazine sections. I’ll tell you later about some of my finds as now I’m more than ready to curl up with some of my books, but before I do that I have a few things to share.
First, for those of you who enjoy a good mystery did you see that the Edgar‘s were just awarded? I haven’t read any of these. Does it count if some of the books are on my radar? ha.
Who all is participating in Persephone Reading Week hosted by Claire & Verity? I missed out the first time around but this time I’m there. I have three books to choose from so over the weekend I hope to decide on one. I’ll keep you posted.
Finally, as April draws to a close it’s goodbye to another National Poetry Month. In honor of that I picked up the latest issue of The American Poetry Review. And, as the issue has one of Lucille Clifton’s last interviews I thought I’d share one of her poems which I just love.
Homage to My Hips
these hips are big hips.
they need space to
move around in.
they don’t fit into little
petty places. these hips
are free hips.
they don’t like to be held back.
these hips have never been enslaved,
they go where they want to go
they do what they want to do.
these hips are mighty hips.
these hips are magic hips.
i have known them
to put a spell on a man and
spin him like a top
Isn’t that great? Have a wonderful weekend and more bookish talk soon.

I love the Homage to My Hips! Hope you have a great weekend Iliana.
I’m very excited about Persephone Week. I look forward to seeing what you’ll be reading. Have a great weekend!
Glad you’re joining us for Persephone Reading Week this time around, Iliana. I thought I had finalised my reading for the week but I’ve been distracted by new Persephones.
I’ll be participating in Persephone week! I’ll be reading Good Evening, Mrs. Craven.
I’m not a poetry person, but I think I could be if they were all as great as that ode to hips. I might even come to terms with mine if I read poems like that!
I have read Jo Nesbo before and think he’s wonderful, so will definitely be reading Nemesis at some point. I also want to read Malla Nunn’s book, but the rest are new to me. I’ve already started my Persephone as I expect I won’t get it finished before the end of the week–I picked Someone at a Distance and am already very much into the story just a few chapters in. Have fun choosing a book to read and enjoy your weekend!
Kathleen – Isn’t it wonderful? It just makes me smile 🙂
Nymeth – Although I do have three books to choose from I keep thinking this would be a wonderful excuse to order some more! haha…
Claire – I’m very excited and thank you for hosting the event. I’m really looking forward to reading reviews of more Persephone books and talking about such a great publisher.
Amanda R. – Yay, Glad to see you joining too. Your book is one of my choices 🙂
Sandy – Haha… I agree, it’s a great poem and makes you feel all feisty doesn’t it?
Danielle – I remember you mentioned I believe the first Nesbo book. I still have that one on my shelf! The Malla Nunn is one I really would like to read in particular. I have Someone At a Distance too! I still don’t know which one I’ll pick but I’m sure I’ll enjoy any of them.
I love that poem! I’m not participating in Persephone week but I’ll probably read something by the publisher soon. I haven’t read anything on the Edgar list but I hope to do so soon. Hope you’re having a great weekend.
I love that poem. I should print it out and tape it to my desk. 🙂 I hope you had a nice weekend. A friend sent me the link for the Edgar’s. I haven’t read any of the books that one either, although I do have the copy of The Last Child my boss loaned me sitting on my desk to read. I really should get to it soon so she can pass it on to more of her reader friends! She loved it.
Have a great week, Iliana!
I like that poem! Thanks for the Edgars link, i’ll have to check that out.
I love that poem! It made me smile, and in my opinion, a little Keats goes a long way so thanks for sharing about some of our best parts for Poetry Month!
What Persephones are you considering? I can’t wait to see what everyone’s reading, discuss what may be similar (or not) and add to the ever increasing wish list! I’ll be back throughout the week.
Can you believe that I haven’t even read a Persephone book yet? I have added a few books on to my wishlist based on a few bloggers’ recommendations so I hope to read them in the near future. 🙂
Hope you have a great week ahead, Iliana!
Vasilly – It’s such a great poem isn’t it? Makes me smile. Lots of great sounding stuff on the Edgar’s and Persephone’s website. I want all of those books!
Literary Feline – I used to keep a little poem journal and would carry around some of my favorites. Yes, read the Last Child – I want to know what you think!
bookworm – I hope you find something there that you want to read.I’m sure you will!
Bellezza – Oh Keats is great too. I haven’t read anything of his in a while though. I need to remember to continue poetry month throughout the year! I just decided on Mariana by Monica Dickens. I’ve had it the longest so it won. haha.
Melody – I just know you’d love a Persephone. Seriously,if you can get your hands on Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day you won’t regret it. You have a great week too!
Love the Clifton poem! That is one of hers I haven’t read. Thanks for sharing it!
I’ve seen that Clifton poem everywhere. I have the latest issue of that poetry mag as well, though i haven’t gotten to it yet.
Stefanie – Isn’t it wonderful. Such fierceness 🙂
Serena – I just started reading more of it today and there are quite a few poems that I’ll definitely have to read more than once to understand that’s for sure.
