It’s time to welcome November and with another reading event, Margaret Atwood Reading Month hosted by Buriedinprint.
I love that you can really join in a variety of ways, whether you want to blog, read various books or do a readalong, etc.
I wanted to join in because for the longest time I’ve always said that The Handmaid’s Tale is one of my favorite books. I read that in 1998 and went on to re-read it again many years later. One of the few books I’ve re-read. I also read the graphic novel version.
But that’s not the only Margaret Atwood book I’ve read. Others are: The Robber Bride, Cat’s Eye, Life Before Man, Alias Grace, and The Penelopiad.
When you look at her list of published books, it is impressive and there is so much to choose from. I have quite a few unread Atwood books on my shelves and I think the most recent book I’ve read was The Penelopiad a couple of years ago or maybe it was the graphic novel version of The Handmaid’s Tale. Either way, it’s been too long since I read her so count me in for this one.
Which book am I going to pick up? Well, that’s still a surprise to me. I’m finishing up a book tonight and want to finish that before I start a new one but I will get back to you on that. Are you joining in on #MARM2021? What’s your favorite Atwood?
Good for you! I’ve never cared too much for Atwood, but I keep trying. I’ve read The Handmaid’s Tale (twice), The Edible Woman, Cat’s Eye, Oryx and Crake and maybe Alias, Grace. I might have given up on that last one. Have fun with this challenge!
Can you believe I’ve never read any of her books? Good luck with this reading challenge! 🙂
I’ve enjoyed Atwood … let’s see I’ve read Surfacing, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments, The Robber Bride, Alias Grace, Oryx and Crake, and Stone Mattress: Nine Tales …. but there’s many others I haven’t read yet. Still Atwood will have to wait this month. It’s hard to say which one I liked best … but perhaps you should read The Testaments and Stone Mattress … both good ones.
Atwood has not been one of my favorites, I wasn’t crazy about The Robber Bride and disliked Alias Grace and never read The Handmaid’s Tale, but I did really enjoy The Penelopiad!
Another fabulous reading challenge! November is just teeming with inspiration and I’m having a touch time choosing! But I do have a review to post for Penelopiad, so looks like this is the perfect month for that. Thank you for letting us know!
I hope you enjoy your Atwood reading this month; I’m happy that the loose structure works for you. There are so many “angles” with her work, especially when you include her children’s books, her comics, her non-fiction (including her books on writing and her essays), even besides the novels and short stories (which, unsurprisingly, are what drew me to her work first). Thank you kindly for posting about your excitement over participating and I’m looking forward to hearing how you fare with your plans.
Lesly in OR – I’ve had more success than with others that’s for sure but The Handmaid’s Tale is still my favorite. She was in Austin several years ago for the Texas Book Festival and I was so bummed out I missed her but I do have a signed book thanks to a friend who got me one.
Lark – Well, this could be the time to discover her! 🙂
Susan – I did end up going with The Testaments mainly because I’d re-read the Handmaid’s Tale (graphic novel version) not to long ago and thought with it being the most recent in my mind it would be the one to go to next. I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Jen Mullen – I really enjoyed The Penelopiad too! I would like to try some of her poetry one of these days too. For now I decided to go with The Testaments and so far so good!
Lex @ Lexlingua – I know right? I just wish we could all take a month off of work and responsibilities and we could devote it to reading with all these great challenges. Can’t wait to hear what you thought of The Penelopiad and yes, perfect timing!
BuriedinPrint – Oh that’s so interesting to hear that the short stories were how you first discovered Atwood. I feel like for many people it’s usually The Handmaid’s Tale. I’m very excited and have decided to go with The Testaments. So far I’m really liking it.
The Handmaid’s Tale was the last book I read by this author and I haven’t anything by her ever since. I think I’ve to add her backlist onto my wishlist so I’ll read them at some point.
