Some new Advance Review Copies have arrived at Casa Bookgirl over the past few days and I had to share these with you.
- Crow Mercies by Penelope Scambly Schott. This is a collection of poetry published by Calyx Books. I was actually familiar with Calyx Journal but for some reason I didn’t realize they also had books. I’m very excited about this collection.
- By Fire, By Water by Mitchell James Kaplan. A novel set in Spain during the Inquisition. Oh can you imagine what awaits? On a superficial note, this is published by Other Press books and I’ve got to say I really like the feathered edges.
- Of Bees and Mist by Erick Setiawan. A story that chronicles three generations of women under one family tree and places them in a mythical town where spirits and spells and witchcraft and demons are an everyday reality.
- The Red Queen by Philippa Gregory. Another tale of the Tudors filled with conspiracy, passion, and coldhearted ambition.
I think I’m set for the weekend. Aside from reading, I hope to get in a bit of crafting too. Hope you have a very fun weekend!

I’ve not heard of any of these but based on the premise, I think you are in good hands for the weekend! I’m getting together with high school friends this weekend, so I doubt I will read one word!
By Fire, By Water sounds really good. Looking forward to your thoughts!
You know I have Crow Mercies too. We will have to compare notes. Of Bees and Mist sounds like it might be good fun!
My book arrived yesterday and I did get a new book at Half Price the other day so I have a good pile going. I need to get into my sewing room before the day gets too warm – working on some machine quilting.
enJOY your weekend
I’ve been trying hard not to be tempted by review copies and have been declining most things, though one or two books has arrived lately as a surprise in the mail. I have such a large stack already that I need to read that should keep me busy for a while. I love Other Press books by the way–I’ve bought a few this spring and they are nicely done. I will have to take a look at By Fire, By Water. Have a great weekend!
I can’t wait to see your review of The Red Queen – I have that on my TBR list!
Enjoy your weekend!
I haven’t heard of any of these either, I’ll have to check them out! Looking forward to the reviews!
Oooh! Margaret Beaufort is interesting. Hope you enjoy your books!
I recently got Of Bees and Mist too. I’m looking forward to reading it.
I’m halfway through Of Bees and Mist; it makes me think of Like Water For Chocolate, but I think I like it even better. We’ll have to talk when we finish it, respectively, but I hope you enjoy it as I am. He’s got such a way with words and illusion; magical fantasy at its best! (Okay, except for Murakami, who is my very favorite in that area. 😉
I ended up abandoning Of Bees and Mist. It does fall into the magical realism category, but I’m not a great fan of the genre.
By Fire, By Water is on its way to me, and I can’t wait!
Good stuff. 😀
I’ve seen the red queen floating around a few mailboxes…enjoy!
I love them all. I know By Fire, By Water is on the way and I am really anxious to read The Red Queen. Fantastic choices. Now, what to pick to read first.
