I spent a bit of time at the library this morning. I was there to pick up some holds but of course had to see what else I had to pop into my book bag and here’s what I found:
The first book is Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson. I loved her novel, Speak, which I read a few months ago so I couldn’t pass up this one. You can tell my little bookworm bookmark is already holding my place.
I then couldn’t resist checking out When I Forgot by Elina Hirovnen. This is a Tin House book by a Finnish author. I don’t think I’ve read anything from Finland so already I’m excited about that.
As I’ve been wanting to get back on my short story kick that I had going earlier in the year I thought this would be a wonderful addition to my bag: Sun, Stone and Shadows: 20 Great Mexican Short Stories. I’m looking forward to the ones by Juan Rulfo, Rosario Castellanos, Elena Garro and Carlos Fuentes in particular. I get the feeling though this is one of those books I need to add to my own personal biblioteca*.
The other book is one I had on hold, The Old Capital by Yasunari Kawabata. If you haven’t heard, Tanabata is hosting a book discussion of this book on Nov. 30. Check it out and come join us!
The last book is Mortal Love by Elizabeth Hand. I had to place this one on hold after I read a wonderful review of it over at Nymeth’s blog.
Oh and speaking of book discussions, I’ve been meaning to post about the next Slaves of Golconda selection, The Woman in Black by Susan Hill. Discussion starts at the end of October. I read the book several years ago and highly recommend it. Unfortunately I won’t get a chance to do a re-read but I’ll drop in on the discussion. Feel free to join in if you want to talk about this spooky tale.
Now, I’m off to continue reading Wintergirls. What did you check out from the library?
*biblioteca = library
I picked up Hotel at the Corner of Bitter and Sweet this week and tonight is the night for reading – cold and blustery outside and nothing on TV to watch!
Lovely loot, Iliana! I love that bookmark, so cute! 🙂
I was bad, I had bigger eyes than stomach, a french saying that means that you took on more than you could chew… So: Patterns of the Earth by Bernhard Edmaier, Encyclopedia of Polymer Clay Techniques by Sue Heaser, Wonder Woman by Jodi Picoult (Graphic Novel), Encaustic Workshop by Patricia Baldwin Seggebruch, Frustration by Claire Bretecher (a french feminist comic book, she was my guru when I was 18), Moonlight Downs by Adrian Hyland (Australian mystery in a serie with Emily Tempest), An Incomplete Revenge by Jacqueling Winspear (I had skipped that one and had to retrace Maisie’s footsteps, I really enjoyed that one, it would have been sad to miss it). Hopefully I will be able to renew some of those for another two weeks as I don’t read that fast… Happy reading Iliana. In French Library is Bibliotheque very close to Spanish by the way.
I can’t wait to hear what you think of Wintergirls. After reading Speak I added it to my TBR list also!
What a cute bookmark! Wintergirls was amazing, but it totally sucked out my will to live for a couple days. That Mexican anthology looks marvelous! I’m going to have to ILL The Old Capital to join in Tanabata’s book group-my library doesn’t have it. :/ It also doesn’t have The Woman in Black, which is also never in bookstores I visit. SO weird!
Wicked Loot 🙂
And such a cute bookmark 🙂 🙂
Wintergirls had some great reviews i think!
Enjoy your reads 🙂
My local library on Kauai is at Hanapepe. The holds I picked up today are, “Carbs and Cadavers,” “The Day the Rabbi Left Town,” “The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon,” and finally, “Creating Books and Boxes.” They know me well there. As soon as they see my car pull up, they grab my books and have them waiting for me when I enter.
Yay! I’m so glad you’ll be joining us in reading The Old Capital. 🙂
When I Forgot sounds good. Y’know, I don’t think I’ve ever read a Finnish author either.
Wintergirls is supposed to be a hard read, but wonderful. Typical of Anderson! I haven’t visited the library in person lately. I prefer to sit here in my cave and order them online!
I also really want to read The Woman in Black and Wintergirls. I look forward to your thoughts on both!
Wintergirls is definitely on my TBR list. My daughter just finished it, so I am hoping that I can borrow her copy.
I read The Woman in Black a few years ago as well, and have been fortunate enough to see the play twice in London’s West End. I absolutely LOVE that story and look forward to reading more of Susan Hill’s works.
I’ve had Wintergirls on my TBR list for awhile now. Hope you enjoy it. I love your bookmark!
Ok, the books are great, but that bookmark is completely adorable!
The bookmark makes me smile. You’ve got some good reading ahead!
Juliann – Did you get a new blog? And, can you believe it’s Fall but it’s 94 degrees here in Austin today. I’m kind of ready for wintery weather 🙂 Hope you are enjoying your book!
Melody – Isn’t he cute? I found him on one of my Germany trips so every time I use him I think of that town I visited. Gorgeous.
Roxane – Ooh you got lots of goodies there. I’ve glanced through that Encuastic Workshop book and it’s so cool. I would really like to try encaustics again. Glad you went back to get the Maisie Dobbs book. I just love that series. Definitely one of my favorites!
Kathleen – I finished it last night. It was so good but very emotional! I definitely need to post about it soon before I forget all the good stuff.
Eva – Good description of Wintergirls! So true. So glad you are joining Tanabata’s book discussion. I’m really looking forward to reading another book by Kawabata.
Veens – Put it on your list! It was so good 🙂
Rob – What a great title list there. Lots of variety! You’ll have to let me know if you try one of the projects in Books & Boxes and what you thought of the instructions. I have quite a little library of books on bookbinding but haven’t added that title to my shelf – yet 🙂
tanabata – I’m really excited to read the book. Just saw that it was one of the titles for which he was nominated for the noble prize for literature! It’ll be very interesting to read this one!
Sandy – Well, I get the feeling your cave with all those books must be a nice place 🙂 Wintergirls was very good but sad. Speak was also sad but this one I don’t know was more “vivid” – I don’t know maybe that’s because I just finished yesterday and it’s still on my mind.
Nymeth – The Woman in Black is fantastic. Just a great ghost story – very atmospheric. And, I finished Wintergirls last night and hope to do a review soon! But, thumbs up!
Molly – Oh, get your daughter’s copy ASAP! 🙂 How fun to see the play in London’s West end! I bet that was such an experience. I was lucky to see a play too but just in Dallas 😉 I’ve read a few other books by Susan Hill and unfortunately didn’t love them as much but I know a lot of people really like her mystery series.
Stephanie – It was great! Keep it on your wish list 🙂
Stefanie – Isn’t he cute? Found him in a German bookstore. I think he needs a good German name don’t think? 🙂
jenclair – I’ve already finished one of my books – I’m excited. usually I have to renew a lot and then end up taking a lot back unread! Yikes. Maybe I’m on a good start this time 🙂
You have a good stack there from the library! I have really enjoyed checking out books from the library. I actually have a stack of photography books I need to finish before they are due!
christine – I was on a library ban for most of the summer so it’s so fun to go back to the library! I feel like I’m discovering so many new books. Enjoy your photography books and tell me if you recommend some!
Looking forward to your thoughts on Wintergirls. I’ve heard it’s good.
Ahhh you have Wintergirls, yay so excited to hear what you think – I want to read that book so much!
I wasn’t going to reread the Hill book, but I decided to pull it out after all as it’s been a few years since I first read it. I’m enjoying it as much the second time around as the first. Enjoy your books!
It’s hard to walk away with only the books you intended to leave with–especially when there are so many other good looking books begging you to take them home with you. 🙂 Enjoy your library books, Iliana!
