This week’s library loot was a small haul. I had two books on hold to pick up and as I didn’t have much time to wander around I only managed to add another book to the small stack. Let me tell you about my finds:
The first book is Crank by Ellen Hopkins. Kailana recently mentioned this book and it sounded good to me. I haven’t read a YA book in a while and want to give this one a try. Here’s from the back of the book: Kristina Georgia Snow is the perfect daughter: gifted high school junior, quiet, never any trouble. But on a trip to visit her absentee father, Kristina disappears and Bree takes her place. Bree is the exact opposite of Kristina — she’s fearless. Ooh, I wonder what will happen!
The other book I had put on hold was Laika by Nick Abadzis. This one was a recommendation from Nymeth and I’m sure I’m going to enjoy it. This graphic novel which blends fiction with fact is about Laika, an abandoned puppy destined to become Earth’s first space traveler.
Finally, Toronto Noir ended up in my pile because as I’ve mentioned I’m trying to read more short stories and I couldn’t pass up this collection. Actually, I realize that there are a bunch of others in this series, each noir collection set in a distinct neighborhood or location within the city of the book. Has anyone read any of the books from this series? Take a look at the Akashic Noir site to check out the other titles.
Oh and of course I couldn’t leave the library without picking up the latest BookPage Magazine. My sixth sense tells me I’ll be adding a lot of new books to my list. heh.
Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Eva and Alessandra that encourages bloggers to share the books theyΓ’β¬β’ve checked out from the library. Go visit them and add your haul to the link!
I’m really interested in the noir collections. I think my husband has the Los Angeles one and is working his way through it. I will probably read it at some point.
I recently received the audio “A Partisan’s Daughter” by Louis DeBernier, on the recommendation from one of my blogger friends that read audio (I’m awful, I can’t remember who!). I think it was acclaimed as a good audio book in a resource somewhere. It is brilliant. And not too long. Because for every book I read, I add ten to the list!
I can’t wait to see what you think of Laika. Crank sounds great too!
I read Crank and it’s sequel, Glass, last month and thought they we’re both really great.
I have yet to read/listen to a Hopkins book, but I have three of hers on my iPod. I’m ready! π
Crank is excellent..and after I read that one I quickly went through her entire list of books published and not once was I disappointed!! I checked out Laika too…and it’s all Nymeth’s fault!!
noir books are fantastic.
Literary Feline – You’ll have to tell us what your husband thought of it and hopefully you’ll read it too! I haven’t read much noir really but I’m sort of getting into it more.
Sandy – Ooh, I’ll have to jot that down. I loved Captain Corelli’s Mandolin but the other DeBernier novel I read (I’m blanking out on the name right now) I didn’t really get into and didn’t finish. I’ll have to look for this one!
Nymeth – I’ve only taken some cursory glances and I love the pictures. Laika is so cute. I get the feeling I’ll be crying!
Christina – Oh good to hear! I haven’t started it yet but I get the feeling this is one of those books that I’ll end up ditching everything to read in a day! π
Joy – You are set! You just need some time right? π I hope you enjoy them and will be looking for your review notes.
Staci – I tell you, that Nymeth is bad for my TBR list π I’m guessing all of Hopkins books are YA? I’ll have to look further into them.
Serena (Savvy Verse & Wit) – They are aren’t they? Just such a great sense of atmosphere, well, when they are well-written!
Bookpage magazine is one of my favorite parts of visiting the library!
I don’t know much about noir. I know I’ve read one because the book jacket called it that. LOL
Hope you enjoy these!
I just started reading Impulse by Hopkins today. It’s a new style for me, so I guess I’ll see how much I like it.
I hope you enjoy Crank! I REALLY need to get around to reading the sequel. My friend wants it back.
Stephanie – Me too! I always rush over and get my copy so I won’t forget to leave it without it π
anna – I don’t think I’m that much of an expert on it either but I’m starting to realize when noir is done well, it’s really intense and good π
Melissa – Oh cool! I haven’t gotten to Crank yet as I got sidetracked by another book but I hope to start it over the weekend.
Kailana – Oh darn, you have to give it back?! π Enjoy the sequel and I’ll be looking forward to the review!
The Noir series sounds really interesting, thanks for the link. I’d like to read Paris Noir and London Noir and quite a few others too.
I really have to try one of those Noir books–I see they have a whole series of them. I’ve been a poor short story reader this year, but these could be fun.
