I had to go to the library this afternoon to pick up a book for my mystery book group meeting in September but I managed to walk away with a few others. I shouldn’t have picked those up as I have so many new books to read but I couldn’t help it. They sounded interesting and why not?
Anyway, I got The Tin Roof Blowdown by James Lee Burke. This is for my new mystery book group that I’ve joined in Austin. You know me, I don’t like to read series in the middle and this is the 16th in the series. Yikes. I think I’m going to have to get over my “must-start-at-the-beginning-of-a-series” mode.
I also checked out B As in Beirut by Iman Humaydan Younes. This book is about the lives of four women who live in Beirut during the Lebanese civil war. I also noticed that this is published by an imprint I’m not familiar with, Interlink Books. I had a quick look at their web site and I already like what I see.
Because I always like a good Victorian setting, I couldn’t walk away without A Tissue of Lies by Tessa Barclay. I also picked up Skim by Mariko Tamaki, which means I may actually finish my Graphic Novels Challenge soon.
Of course I also picked up the free copy of BookPage but I think I’ve already heard of all the books mentioned from you guys. Gotta love that.
Anyway, I’m still behind on my emails and blog reading so I apologize. I had planned to make a dent into that today but I found my energies going into dealing with car insurance stuff. You see, on the weekend a big car decided to park close to my small car and then they couldn’t get out very easily. When they tried, my poor car got some small scratches. It’s a pain to deal with this but at least the girls waited for me to get to my car to give me their insurance info. More book talk tomorrow.
I hate to jump into a book and realizes it’s in the middle of an ongoing series. That has happened to me several times! ;P
Looks like you’ve a great reading week ahead. I’m sorry to hear about your car, hopefully the insurance will settle everything soon!
Wow, that’s a lot of books from the library. Can you finish before their due back??:>
huh. I didn’t know about Bookpage and now I’m browsing reviews and adding more stuff to my list! Thanks a lot! 😉
I read Tin Roof Blowdown last year for my book club and really enjoyed it. It was actually the first book by Burke that I had read. The author does a good job because I didn’t feel like I was reading a book in the middle of a series. It stands alone nicely.
The B as in Beruit book sounds really interesting. I will have to check out the Interlink site.
That was very nice of the girls to wait for you. It is a major inconvenience but at least they took responsibility – that doesn’t happen so often nowadays! 😉
I second Christine-sorry your car got scratched, but at least they stayed! I hate car insurance-it’s so annoying. My car was in the shop for two weeks while they got all of these huge hail dents out of it: part of the reason it took so long was that the insurance company kept rejecting the more expensive process that the body shop said was the only way to fix it. So the the shop had to try the cheap ways first, then show the insurance that it hadn’t worked. *rolls eyes*
I hate starting in the middle too! I also try to start from the beginning.
Isn’t car insurance the pits?
Insurance companies, auto or medical, are just pain to deal with. Hope yours reimbursement will come through soon.
I haven’t read much of series, but the 16th is not where I would begin. 🙂
I say NEVER….never get over you “have to start at the beginning of a series” mode.:~)
I do the same thing…. I go as far to have a small notebook in my purse with lists of series I want to read and have crossed off the ones I have at home, etc. This comes in good in used book stores.
wow…that sounds very “dorky” …..(for lack of a better word.) Last nigt my grandson called his cousin a “game geek”… I’m sure me being called “book geek” isn’t far behind.
Still…. I think starting at the beginning is the way to go
Why not indeed! They are free, so help yourself, I say. We always have a ton of books checked out, usually at least 30 children’s book and sometimes I have up to 10 (gulp!) cookbooks.
Melody – I know, I hate starting later in the series! Oh and luckily the insurance peeps are being very nice so I won’t complain 🙂
Nicole – Shhh, don’t tell anyone but I usually return most of my library books unread. There’s just never enough time 🙂
joanna – I love BookPage. You can view it online but most of the public libraries around my area have free copies of it so I snag it. It’s great. I always find books to add to my list!
Lisa – Oh I’m so glad to hear that! Hopefully I’ll like it well enough to go ahead and start at the beginning!
Christine – I thought of our foreign authors book group when I found this book. Wouldn’t it have been a great book to nominate? And, yes, the girls were really nice. I actually felt a bit bad for them – they were teens and I thought they were about ready to cry! Luckily the damage is really minor.
Eva – I’m supposed to take my car in on Friday. They did tell me I get a rental car so hopefully no surprised when I get there!
Jessica – Definitely the pits. So far they’ve been very nice though and at least that helps.
Matt – Oh gosh, yes, Medical insurance is awful. I still remember when my dad was ill and we had to jump through so many hoops. I mean, people are sick and yet they still have to worry about paperwork! Something is seriously wrong with that!
Debbie – I’ll be a book geek with you 🙂 I also keep track of which is next in a series so I’ll be sure to read them in order! ha,ha.. I can’t help it. I think it just really adds to the understanding of the characters and it’s just fun to wait & see what will happen next rather than already know.
Tara – That’s what I say “free”! Ha,ha.. I’ve just been trying a bit of restraint as I’m tryign to work through my shelves but I can’t resist taking home books – especially when they are the new books on the shelves 🙂
Let me know how the Tin Roof is. My Katrina-fatigued friends hated the book.
Isabel – I thought about you when I read the book jacket. I can imagine that this would not be your first choice of reading material. I wasn’t too excited about it either but have since heard some good things about it and some of the reviews were quite good too. We’ll see how it goes 🙂
I’ve written down A Tissue of Lies–that one is new to me and it does sound good. Sorry to hear about the car–what a pain!
