I stopped at the library today to pick up my two holds and I did check out the sale section again but no treasures this time. That’s ok, I think I have plenty of books to read. heh.
My holds were for A Corpse in the Koryo by James Church and Dope by Sara Gran. These are both for my Murder on Monday book group. The Church book is the February choice so I need to get to that one first.
Of course I couldn’t leave the library without checking out the new books section and I picked up these books: Last Night at the Lobster by Stewart O’Nan (have heard good things about this one from some blog friends), Tom Bedlam by George Hagen (I liked the book cover) and The Theory of Clouds by Stephane Audeguy.
While I was at the library I also checked out the latest Utne Reader. I love this magazine and probably should subscribe again but I’m trying to hold back on any more magazine subscriptions (we subscribe to lots already). Off to catch up on my reading – I can’t seem to get ahead in any of my books.
Subscriptions are a problem, aren’t they? I keep giving way and then find that at the end of the month I’ve a pile of magazines and journals still unread because there has been no time left over from books. It doesn’t stop me subscribing though!
Keep reading at the library.
Save your money and space in your precious bookshelf.
I haven’t stopped by in a while… Good that you are so hard at work reading… I love the Stein quote, by the way, and find it a life-calling 🙂 Cheers JCR
Ooh, want to hear how you like Night at the Lobster.
Happy reading!
You’re going to love LAST NIGHT AT THE LOBSTER. It is one of my new favorite books of all times, beautifully written, rich characters.
Ann Darnton – I lost count but I think we are at 10 or 12 subscriptions. It’s just so easy to get them especially when they have the promos aren’t they?
Isabel – I love the library. I am trying to read more from my stacks though so I can have extra room for new books 🙂
JCR – Hey, good seeing you. Glad you liked the quote – I did too 🙂
LK – I promise to keep you posted. Hope you are taking care of yourself!
Karen Olson – Yay, another vote for the book. First I heard about it on NPR and then some of my bloggy friends mentioned it. It sounds like a must!
Ohh… looks like you got some good stuff.
Tom Bedlam looks really good to me…I’ve already taken it out once but never got to it. I do hope you read it (selfishly!) so that I have your opinion on it! But no pressure….;-)
I really liked A Corpse in the Koryo. Sometimes a little difficult to follow, but what an insight into a very closed country!
I’ve been avoiding our library sale corner because I almost *never* come out of it without some little treasure. And, I need to read from my stacks. I can relate. 🙂
I have to keep resisting the temptation to subscribe to various magazines. They interest me and I want to read them, but then the time comes and they end up sitting on my night-table under a pile of books, un- or partially read until the next issue comes along, and repeat!
I want to read Dope, too. I’m not familiar with the other books you mention, I’ll have to check them out! I am very bad with magazines–I subscribe and then they sit around unread. I have tried to stop from doing that–but the temptation is hard to fight sometimes!
Last year, Dope was one of the books I looked forward to reading the most…yes, there’s a but…but it just didn’t do anything for me. Gran has been compared to Raymond Chandler and I think this was a worthy comparison, but the problem was that she sounded too much like Chandler.
