I went to my book group on Tuesday and we discussed The Laptev Virus by Christy Esmahan. While this had the premise of an exciting thriller – imagine a new breakout of an unknown virus – it was not a favorite of ours. We didn’t like the characterization, the ending and overall we felt like it was a missed opportunity by the author. As usual though these reads which aren’t favorites typically generate a lot of discussion. Before you know it we were talking about artificial intelligence, cloning and criminal defense by virus!
Next month we are going to discuss Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz and I hope this will be a good read.
Anyway, I think I mentioned a while back that I had been busy getting a lot of books off of NetGalley and most of those are mysteries so I thought I’d share with you some of the titles I couldn’t pass up and are now on my Kindle:
Little Secrets by Anna Snoekstra. An arsonist is on the loose in Colmstock, Australia, most recently burning down the town’s courthouse and killing a young boy who was trapped inside.
Faithless by Kjell Ola Dahl. When the body of a woman turns up in a dumpster, scalded and wrapped in plastic, Inspector Frank Frølich is shocked to discover that he knows her—and their recent meetings may hold the clue to her murder.
The Girl Who Came Back by Kerry Wilkinson. When six-year-old Olivia Adams disappeared from her back garden, the small community of Stoneridge was thrown into turmoil. How could a child vanish in the middle of a cosy English village?
Murderous Mistral by Cay Rademacher. Capitaine Roger Blanc, an investigator with the anti-corruption-unit of the French Gendarmerie, was a bit too succesfull in his investigations. He finds himself removed from Paris to the south of France, far away from political power. Or so it would seem.
I have quite a few more to tell you about but I’ll save those for another post. In the meantime I hope you are all ready for the weekend and for some fun. We don’t have any major plans but I’m sure books will somehow be involved. Have a wonderful weekend!
You have quite a few tempting reads ahead! I’ll be curious to hear what you and your book club think of Magpie Murders next month… it’s on my wish list.
I missed Magpie Murders on NetGalley! I enjoyed Kerry Wilkinson’s The Girl Who Came Back, and then went on to read his Jessica Daniel’s series! 🙂
Sounds like your discussion turned out to be more interesting than the book itself!
There are too many great sounding mysteries out there right now. I wish I could read faster–or at least had more time to read. Don’t we all wish for that though?
I hope you group enjoys Magpie Murders. I haven’t read that one, but it’s on my wish list. Little Secrets is one I really want to read too.
I hope you have a great week, Iliana!
I’ve been hearing lots of good things on Magpie Murders so I’m definitely intrigued. Sounds like you’ll have a good reading time ahead with those books from NetGalley. Hope you enjoy them all! 🙂
I have heard good things about the Magpie Murders–I have even checked it out from the library at least twice now but didn’t get it read (too long and too popular right now–so no time to get it read before the due date!). I look forward to hearing what you think about it. The other four books are all new to me–the last one looks most tempting, so I will have to see if my library has it on order yet–thanks!
