I’ve been a Zyrtec zombie today. I was having some allergies and had to take some medicine, something I try to avoid. It works great for my allergies but it makes me tired. It was all I could do to not fall asleep at work which pretty much meant that reading at lunch time was out. So, the next best thing was to spend some time mooching books.
I have quite a few points and have been saving them but it’s hard to get your hands on some of the newer or popular books. So I started looking for older books and found some that I liked. Here’s what I mooched.
- No Angel by Penny Vincenzi. I’ve heard Danielle talk about this book before so it’s been on my radar for a while.
- They Found Him Dead by Georgette Heyer. I read an article about Heyer’s mysteries in Mystery Scene magazine some time ago and have been looking for some of her mysteries since then but haven’t found any in the bookstores. I’m very curious what this story will be like.
- I Love You Like A Tomato by Marie Giordano. What a title. I couldn’t pass that one up.
- Quieter than Sleep by Joanne Dobson. One of the members in my mystery book group recommended this one.
Now to make some room for the new books. I did notice that the library had their bins out for book donations so I think I need to put a few books aside to donate.

I’ve read the Dobson before — it’s quite good!
Let us know whether the Tomato is funny. I need a fun book.
I’ve read No Angel and I really didn’t like it, but I read it because it came highly recommended. There are quite a few Vincenzi fans on my listserv. I Love You Like a Tomato is definitely a great title. I think I read a positive review of that one, somewhere. Hmm. Might have to add that one to the wish list. 🙂
The library noticed me I’m the next in line for The Book Thief. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
Also paging some books on colonial architecture and arts of Mexico. Gotta get ready for that trip, I mean, mentally. 🙂
Does Zyrtec make you drowsy?
Dorothy W. – Oh good. Glad to hear another vote for the Dobson book!
Isabel – I know what you mean. I could use a good funny book too.
Nancy, aka Bookfool – I promise to post on both and let you know. And, that is one great title isn’t it.
Matt – Keeping fingers crossed for you too! That book is awesome. I’m going to look through my bookshelves and see if I can find anything to recommend to you for your upcoming Mexico trip. How fun. And, Zyrtec doesn’t make me too drowsy but I just feel like I’m on slow mode when I take it. It does work though. Bendadryl works great for me too but that one seriously knocks me out.
Sorry about the allergies–I know what that’s like. I take Claritin, or the prescription version Clarinex, neither of which makes me drowsy. I know Zyrtec makes my son a little drowsy, too. I wonder if there’s something else you could take…
I’ve read Georgette Heyer’s historical fiction, but never her mysteries–let me know what you think!
I really enjoyed No Angel, the whole trilogy actually, of which this is the first. I wouldn’t say Vincenzi is fine literature by any means, just great escapism.
What a coincidence…I had major attack yesterday and knocked out thanks to Zyrtec. Love that drug…lol!!
Omigosh, Georgette Heyer – I haven’t read any of her books in yonks!!! But I know I enjoyed them tremendously. Must go find some.
I’m attacking my books again, in between trying to finish an afghan I started while at my sister’s. She’s responsible for me catching the crochet bug again – but it’s been fun. I’ll post pixs when it’s done (about 1/2 done).
Gentle Reader – I have tried some other medicines and they don’t seem to work as well. Darn. See, I had heard a lot about Heyer but I thought she was a romance writer, until I read the article in Mystery Scene and found out she also wrote mysteries.
Tara – I’m all for escapism! Sometimes you just need those kinds of books right.
Kisane – Ha,ha… What gets me is that I only used to get allergies in the Spring. Now it seems to be so random. And, yes please post pics of the afghan. I’d love to see your crochet work.
I like the sound of the Tomato book. Should be a fun, light read…
So sorry about your allergies! I can certainly relate. I’ve always heard that eating locally produced honey (in tea or something) can help. Not sure if it actually works for me, but I find it psychologically comforting!
Like Tara said Vincenzi isn’t exactly highbrow, but I loved it anyway. Sometimes it’s nice to just read something easy and entertaining. I’ve been in a mooching mood, too, but I haven’t really found much–either I don’t get there in time for something from my wishlist or the book I want is only available from someone abroad and they don’t mail internationally. It looks like you’ve come across some good titles.
Oh thanks so much for looking. You’re so kind. I was surprised Borders isn’t very stocked with the subject on Mexican history and architecture. So I plan to visit the used stores this weekend and see what I can dig up. 🙂
I have very bad allergy every year from late Feb to early April, and I’ve been taking the non-drowsiness formula of Claritin.
Are you having problems with Bookmooch at the mo?
Kelly – I hadn’t heard that about honey. I’m going to have to try that! Thank you. I do like to use honey in tea rather than sugar although I tend not to drink tea in the summer. Maybe I need to start though 🙂
Danielle – But you know, you gotta have those entertaining reads especially after tough books. Do you ship internationally? I do but I think I’m going to have to stop. I just sent off a book yesterday to the U.K. and cost me almost $6. Yikes.
Matt – Have fun on your book quest. Sad when the big chains don’t have a good section isn’t it. I haven’t found anything yet but I’ll keep looking 🙂
Jodie – I have. They seem to be running really slow. I couldn’t log in yesterday at all but today I was able to get in. Good luck!
Loved the whole Dobson series. Have fun!
I read somewhere that the creator of Bookmooch is currently rewriting the code from the bottom up to make it run faster and more smoothly – slowdowns are due to the enormous increase in use, I guess. And I think US postal rates must be pretty good – it costs me at least $6 every time I send something within Canada, nevermind the outrageous overseas costs!
I’ve begun to focus my mooching efforts on older books…classics in fact. I’ve gotten a lot of really nice ones!
Melanie – So good to hear about the Dobson series. And, yes I saw something on the BookMooch blog about the slowness. I didn’t realize mailing was so expensive in Canada. I guess I shouldn’t complain much huh 🙂
Andi – I think that’s the way to go on BookMooch to get some books. Otherwise you are always fighting for the new ones!
Ugh, Zyrtec. I have to take that every day. It keeps me alive and all, so I appreciate it, but even taking it at night means grogginess for the first hour after waking up. But isn’t bookmooch the best? I just love it.
