I love coming home to a mailbox of good stuff and today was a great day. First, many thanks go to Stefanie. I was one of the lucky winners of a chapbook she was giving away. The Pulitzer Prize nominated chapbook, Music Like Dirt by Frank Bidart, is a collection of poems centralizing on the theme of the human drive to create. I’ve only done a quick glance through it but look forward to spending some hours exploring the poems.
Also in my mailbox was the latest New York Review of Books. I have to fess up though and admit I’m behind on a couple of issues of this as well as Bookforum. Sigh.
And, those journals will have to wait because I started a new book, Astrid & Veronika by Linda Olsson. I kind of wondered if maybe I shouldn’t have saved this book up for when the temps in Dallas hit 100+ though, because the author describes a world of snowy fields, chunks of ice breaking in the river and seeking the warmth of a fleece jacket.
I really think there’s nothing nicer than receiving books in the post. It always makes my heart leap with excitement!
I can’t wait to hear what you think of Astrid and Veronika – I have held that book in my hands many times but have yet to purchase it!
Do you know if these magazines deliver to APO’s?
litlove – I totally agree! 🙂
Stephanie – I’m enjoying it. Lots of good passages on memories, love and loss.
Nik – I just checked both of them and I can’t find anything about APOs. They only mention international subscriptions. Maybe someone else will pipe in with an answer for you. If I find anything else I’ll let you know.
Yay! I’m glad you got the chapbooks! I hope you enjoy it!
That reminds me to reinstate my subscription of New York Review of Books, which I discontinued last year because I simply had no time to read outside of my reading, the book club, and readings for school.
Those look like 2 very good sources for book reviews. Do the print versions contain more information than their online counterparts ?
I’m with litlove, wonderful things arriving in the post will always brighten your day!
I’m with litlove, too! Love the mail when it brings books, not bills.
Let me know how you like Astrid and Veronika–I know of two book groups (not mine) who are reading it.
I’m looking forward to reading your review of Astrid and Veronika—I’d love to see the word-of-mouth grow for this slim, transporting novel. My book group just discussed it last week, so it’s feeling very fresh right now.
I’m behind in reading BookForum, too. I know the feeling! Looking forward to hearing what you think of Astrid and Veronika–I thought it looked interesting.
Stefanie – I’m sure I will!
Matt – I’ve been thinking over some of my subscriptions because I’m getting behind on all of my magazine/journal reading. Darn.
Gavin – I’m surprised at how much content both have on their web site. It’s really a lot. I’d say check out the online version for a while and see if it’s something you’d enjoy. The articles are very in-depth though so if you want more substance then they are a great source.
Max – Indeed! 🙂
Gentle Reader – I’m half way through it so I hope to finish it by the end of this week. I like it but I promise to post back on it.
Jennifer – So I take your book group liked it? I can see how there’d be a lot to discuss. I just love her descriptions of the fields and everyday sort of thing.
Danielle – I hate falling behind too because then I’m thinking is it still newsworthy to read?! Of course it is but you know what I mean 🙂
