I Like Jo

As I read more into Little Women I find myself smiling at some of the situation the girls get into but I couldn’t quite remember all that made Jo my favorite of the March girls, until last night that is.

I read the chapter where the girls and Laurie are playing castles in the air. They voice aloud their desires of what will make them happy when they grow up. Meg is pouting because Jo has just told her she would more than likely be happy with a good husband and angelic children so she tells Jo “You’d have nothing but horses, inkstands, and novels in yours.”

Here’s Jo’s response to that: “Wouldn’t I, though? I’d have a stable full of Arabian steeds, rooms piled with books, and I’d write out of a magic inkstand, so that my works should be as famous as Laurie’s music. I want to do something splendid before I go into my castle – something heroic or wonderful that won’t be forgotten after I’m dead. I don’t know what, but I’m on the watch for it, and mean to astonish you all some day. I think I shall write books, and get rich and famous: that would suit me, so that is my favorite dream.”

Now, I remember why Jo was my favorite.
