Texas summer is definitely here and we’ve been experiencing 100+ temps all week so I feel like I’m in need of some “cool” reading. Scandinavian thrillers, winters in Europe, rainy day settings, you name it. I’ve still got my Norwegian mystery book I’m reading but if you have a good “cool” book to recommend let me know.
With that in mind, this weekend I plan to stay indoors probably drinking a lot of iced tea and eating cold watermelon. Yum. Ok, probably some ice cream too. Ha.
What about you, what are you up to this weekend?
It’s been a long day today so a short post but I did want to leave you with this summery poem I just read. Very nice don’t you think? Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
Warm summer sun,
Shine kindly here,
Warm southern wind,
Blow softly here.
Green sod above,
Lie light, lie light.
Good night, dear heart,
Good night, good night.
Warm Summer Sun by Mark Twain
It sure was hot and humid in Orlando, but now I’m in Indiana. Not quite as bad up here. But there is nothing quite like a little Jo Nesbo to give me a chill!
Have you read Peter Geye’s novel SAFE FROM THE SEA? Many a blogger loved this one (I thought it was very good and enjoyed it, although it is probably not going to be among my very favorites this year). But Geye’s descriptions of life in the winter along the northern Minnesota coast and a devastating shipwreck will definitely make you feel cold!
This poem could be sang as a lullaby. Very soothing!
No fear about being too hot around here I’m afraid.
Going to a great lecture on Saturday in Seattle. Elin Noble will speak about her hand dyed pieces.
I bought some supplies today at Daniel Smith to make some sketchbooks so I might try that on Sunday afternoon. Not much time to read those days, just two pages a night before going to sleep.
Stay cool!
I’ve been gorging myself on refrigerated watermelon too! And I found a recipe for avocado popsicles that I *really* want to try, but I need to pick up some molds because my family thinks I’m nuts and doesn’t want me ‘contaminating’ theirs. lol
I’ve yet to find a Scandinavian thriller I connect with, but I did do a blog post on cold books last summer: http://astripedarmchair.wordpress.com/2010/07/26/summer-lovin-the-wishful-cooler-thinking-edition/
Lots of people left great suggestions in the comments too! 🙂
Here it is raining cats and dogs which is making me want to snuggle under a blanket and go to sleep. Just like what Aarya (son) does lol.
But that does not mean I cannot have refrigerated custards lol!
Have a great weekend. I have nothing planned, but I find that it’s best that way. I am going to read The Kid, by Sapphire and hopefully start something else.
I congratulate you for taking care of you!
I will be reading “A Town Like Alice”, watching the movie “Rebecca” ( a relative has to write a book report about it – so we will watch the movie first and then start to read together), study a bit, go swimming in an indoor pool, sleeping and napping, and eating gelato.
Very lazy.
Wow, that is some heat! I like your idea of reading books that will help you feel cooler!
It’s very hot here in Ohio too and I have yet to go to the pool! Right now I am just enjoying the AC.
Lovely thoughts from both you and Mark Twain. I’d not read that poem before, but it strikes me rather as a lullaby in its gentle thoughts and rythym. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing that nice poem. Summer is definitely here, it’s been sweltering hot lately. When we’re not indoor in the air conditioning, we’re usually in the pool.
I could never live in TX–too hot for me. Hot weather is miserable and it’s been hot and sticky here in NE–but hotter where you are! How do you keep from melting?! 🙂
