I’ve had a great start to my reading year. Last month I read eight books, two were in translation, a non-fiction, fiction and YA books. I like that I had a bit of variety and hopefully this is a good sign for the year to come.
I participated in the Virago Week readalong, granted I still haven’t finished my book but it’s in progress, and I just saw that Persephone Reading weekend is at the end of this month – woot! I have three or four Persephones waiting for me so that will be the perfect time to pick one up.
I’m still working on some book reviews of recent books read. Some I’ve really enjoyed so I must tell you about those.
I started a new book the other day, The Ice Princess by Camilla Läckberg. So far I’m not sure what to think of this mystery. A woman moves to her hometown after the death of her parents and the death of a childhood friend. She starts to write a book about the friend and discovers secrets. I’m finding that some of the characters, who should care or show some emotion, don’t seem very affected by the death of the friend. Let’s see how it continues.
Now, it’s time for me to climb in bed with a good book and rest up. We had a lot of rain and wind last night which woke me up so I need to catch up on my sleep.
That’s the scoop so far. How was your first month of the year? Hopefully off to a great start.
Although I can’t say that my first month of 2011 was especially exciting, I am pleased to say that I managed to do more writing this month than last year combined. So, my productivity has improved by at least 100%! That ought to count for something. I decided to embark on my own little Happiness Project (based on the book of the same title).
BTW, your journals are absolutely stunning!
Personally I am not too fond of Läckberg, looking forward to getting your opinion on her writing.
I saw another review of this book which was rather lukewarm. I am curious to hear your thoughts. I have my eye on that Persephone reading week as well.
Glad to hear you are joining in with the Persephone Weekend too.
My reading year is off to a slow start but I have hope that it will soon begin to improve!
I liked The Ice Princess, although I did have a few problems with it. It was Lackland’s debut novel, and I like to see how she progressed as an author as she has written several more since then.
January was a pretty good month for me. I read several books that I really enjoyed, but still need to ramp up on the nonfiction.
I really want to read the Lackberg novel, however, I picked up another mystery by a Swedish author Ake Edwardson, but I’m not sure what I think as well. Have you read him? I’m still reading my Viragos, but I also hope to read a Persephone later this month (and will just be reading one, not a handful like I did with the Viragos!).
My reading year is off to a decent start, but you far surpassed me by reading 8 books last month! That’s excellent! I just finished A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan, and Room, by Emma Donoghue–enjoyed them both 🙂
My reading year is slower than last year but i am still happy about what I’ve read. The Ice Princess sounds like a good book –enjoy
I’ll be interested to hear what you think of The Ice Princess when all is said and done. I always find it strange when characters behave in ways that don’t make sense to me i.e they aren’t sad when a friend dies?
Happy February! Your start seems productive, mine was a bit less so, but I’m happy. 🙂
You had a great reading month in January! I hope this month goes just as well. I hope The Ice Princess gets better.
You had a great reading month for January 🙂 I’ve actually been slacking a bit this month, but I want to pick up the pace.
