When I got home today an Amazon box was waiting for me at my door. This is just what I needed to help brighten up my day after a very long and stressful day at work. Don’t you just hate those days? Ah well, that’s over and I’ve spent a very nice evening reading.
Oh I almost forgot to tell you, I got Suite Française by Irène Némirovsky. I didn’t start it tonight but it is going to the top of my nightstand pile. Yes, I only got one book. Hard to believe right?
In the meantime I’m debating whether to continue with The Secret of Lost Things by Sheridan Hay. I’m only at page 30 or so and this book just isn’t grabbing me. It’s supposed to be a story that appeals to the book-obsessed but I almost feel like it’s trying too hard to be appealing. I think this book will go back to the library unread. I won’t completely mark it off my TBR list but for now I will go with something else.
And, that something else is The Anodyne Necklace by Martha Grimes. This is the third book in the Richard Jury series. Ah, it’s good to see that Aunt Agatha is still as maddening as ever.
I haven’t read Martha Grimes in years. Thank you for reminding me of her. I must go and do some digging in the local library – open again today for the first time after Easter. I know everyone deserves a holiday but I hate days when I can’t just stroll in there for a really good browse.
I so enjoy the characters in Martha Grimes’ novels! Melrose Plant has his hands full with Aunt Agatha.
Nice to have Amazon deliver when you most need it!
I went to the store first thing after work on Tues and they don’t have Suite Française by Irène Némirovsky in trade paperback. The front desk person had no clue and then 5 minutes later, the assistant manager informed me that it’s been soldout. So I have to wait. In the meantime I’ll dwell on The Namesake and some Tibet history books.
My husband brought me home a copy of Suite Francaise yesterday to help me feel better because work has been hard. I’ve added it to my list of possible airplane books to take with me on a short trip next month.
Fun! I’m hoping for a bookmooch envelope today to brighten things up.
Martha Grimes. Yet another author I haven’t read yet. Must remedy that.
There’s nothing like a shipment of books to cheer one up. I have a few arriving very soon …… 🙂
Ann – Oh how have you survived with the library closed?! 🙂 Hope you have a nice re-visit with Jury & Plant!
Jenclair – Even though Agatha gets on my nerves I love the way Melrose handles the situations. So funny.
Matt – Sold out? Wow, it really is a bestseller isn’t it. Glad you are enjoying The Namesake. Such a good book.
Stefanie – Mr.Bookman is such a good guy 🙂
Andi – Did your package arrive? Hope so!
Gavin – I agree, those boxes of books never fail to put a smile on my face. I “discovered” the Martha Grimes Jury series last year and the two books I’ve read I’ve really enjoyed.
I’m anxious to hear how you like Suite Francaise. It seems to be one of mixed reviews.
Oh no, I was so looking forward to starting ‘The Sercet..’ It was next on my list. I have read great reviews, so don’t give up!
I did have a little book splurge last week – all Typography related for my course that starts soon (a week later than it was meant to!)…
I am still undecided about whether or not to get Suite Francaise. Hmmm, I seem to have formed a slight affliction to heavy subject books currently!
Don’t you find, though, that once you bring back a book to the library unfinished, you might as well remove it from your TBR list? It has been my experience that I’ll always find other books that are more appealing and I will never go back to that one.
I want to know what you think of Suite Francaise–I want to know what I think of it, too–it’s been sitting on my nightstand for awhile now, but maybe if you start it, I will too 🙂
I love getting those Amazon (or whichever online bookstore!) boxes!! I also bought Suite Francaise yesterday–though I am not sure when I will read it. I came very close to buying the Hay book–as you say it is very appealing to bookish people, but I talked myself out of it. I am on the library list, but now that I see you are not too thrilled with it, I am very glad I didn’t buy it.
Les in NE – I’ll definitely report back!
Kate – Unforutnately it is due back at the library and I couldn’t fall into the narrative so I did set it aside. I’ll be eager to hear what you think about it when you get to it.
Christine – Book splures are a must! I understand, I think I’ve been resisting heavy subject books for years now. ha.ha.
Grominou2 – Yes, sometimes that does happen to me. It does depend on the book. If I really think it’s one I could enjoy I will go back to it later though. we’ll see how it turns out with this one 🙂
Gentle Reader – I promise to report on it. I have to read it by the end of this month so I’ll probably start it next week. It’s one of my book group picks and I do hate to go to book group without having read the book 🙂
Danielle – Book boxes are the best! I am going to look for more reviews on the Hay book or wait for some of my other bloggy friends to read it and see what the verdict is 🙂
There is nothing like receiving an anxiously anticipated package from Borders.com/Amazon. Living in Okinawa where there is no Borders or B&N online shopping is a Godsend.
Today my order I placed last weekend arrived and now I have all the books on my reading club’s TBR list. I will be a busy little reader through June. Whew!!
Karen – That would be hard! I have spent some time in Germany and luckily I found bookstores that carried English books but they can be pricey. I’ve heard from some other bookworm friends that they’ve used The Book Depository (U.K. company) and they’ve had great experience with them. Maybe that’s another resource for you. Anyway, enjoy your new books – that’s always the best thing 🙂
The book depository is an amazing site – really excellent. I highly recommend it (in all its free shipping splendor!)
