Welcome to November and the start of German Literature Month. This reading event hosted by Lizzy and Caroline is now in it’s 10th year. That’s so wonderful isn’t it? I haven’t been able to join in every year but this year I really couldn’t miss it. I already had to miss my annual trip to Germany, at least I can travel via books.
There are different ways to participate and the last week there will be a read along. Of course you can read as you like too of course.
I will warn you, I may be posting more pictures from my travels through Germany so I hope you don’t mind.
As far as the books are concerned, I do have some authors I would like to discover like Gunter Grass, Herman Hesse, and Christa Wolf. I don’t have a lot of books on my shelf by German authors to choose from so this may be a good opportunity to do a bit of book shopping. Anything to add new books right? Ha.
Lizzy and Caroline have some great suggestions if you need don’t know where to start. I have also found this interesting list of 100 German Must Reads. I’ve only read three of those books. If you are more into thrillers, here is a list of Top Five German Thrillers.
I’m going to go through my shelves and see what I can find for this challenge. Let me know if you are joining in or if you have some authors/books to recommend. And, most of all, have a great reading month!
Yikes – no fairy tales on the list. The best ones are the German ones.
Good luck with the reading challenge!
I loved Gunter Grass’ The Tin Drum (oh, so many years ago!) I also loved Steppenwolf, Siddhartha, The Glass Bead Game, and Demian by Hesse. Also very good (and each one so different!) are All’s Quiet on the Western Front, The Reader, and Inkheart which are on the list of 100 German Must Reads. I keep saying that some day I’ll attempt Thomas Mann, but really, probably not. 🙂
I just read this article and now I want a copy of
Not a Novel by Jenny Erpenbeck, essays about her childhood in East Berlin.
Thought this might be good for German Lit. Month.
I’ll be looking forward to your thoughts on some of those books. I haven’t read most of those authors but they do come highly recommended!
Ten years is awesome! I am glad you are taking part in this again this year. I look forward to seeing what you read for this!
