I was reading a newsletter from the Reading Group Center, and there was a mention of some of the books which have been adapted to film and are coming out this year. Of course I prefer to read the book first and maybe see the movie later. Sometimes I rather not though mainly because the actors don’t match the descriptions I have in my mind. It probably just depends on how much I enjoyed the book or if it’s still fresh on my mind.
Anyway here are some of the movies that are coming out this year.
- Atonement by Ian McEwan
- Away from Her by Alice Munro
- Evening by Susan Minot
- The Feast of Love by Charles Baxter
- Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer
- Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
- Lust, Caution by Eileen Chang
- No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy
- Reservation Road by John Burnham Schwartz
- Silk by Alessandro Barrico
The only one I’m really scared of here is Love in the Time of Cholera. I know I’ve raved about this book many times and it really is one of my most favorite books ever so I’d rather not see what Hollywood has done with it.
Any books to film adaptations you are dreading? Any you are looking forward to?
I can’t wait to see The Other Boleyn Girl which is supposted to come out later this year. Natalie Portman plays Anne Boleyn and Scarlett Johannsen her sister Mary. I just love period dramas.
That’s quite a list, isn’t it! I’m interested in seeing Atonement — I liked the book a lot and probably will like the movie too.
I’ve got Atonement on my TBR pile. Probably won’t see the movie though.
There is also “Stardust” which is coming out in August based on Neil Gaiman’s novel and I think this is the year we are supposed to see the first Philip Pullman book turned into a movie… I have read Atonement, and I am not sure if I will watch the movie or not. It will be a last minute decision if I do.
Can’t these people come up w. a movie on their own?
I don’t want to see Outlander made into a movie, ever. Jamie will always live in my head. I have not seen anyone in real life that looks like him.
Think I’ll skip Atonement; don’t need the angst. I do want to see Startdust though!
I totally agree with your statement about “Love in the Time of Cholera.” I hear that some years ago a movie version of “One Hundred Years of Solitude” was in the works, or was finished and it was a complete disaster… Just about the only films from books that I think have been done completely brilliantly are two of Paul Auster’s books (The Music of Chance” and “The Inner Life of Martin Frost”).
John le Carre’s – The Mission Song is going to be adapted. I think they did a pretty good job with The Constant Gardener but I think it is difficult to bring the depth of stories such as that to the big screen.
The Road by Cormac McCarthy I heard is being adapted. It is bad enough that it’s the latest Oprah Book Club selection. I am not really a fan of McCarthy but this book actually sounds interesting but how well will it be adapted to the screen and should it?
The Yacoubian Building was adapted but hasn’t really made it to the cinema here. I think I would be interested in giving that a chance.
Love in the Time of Cholera — that might have to be avoided because it is so lovely as a book.
I had no idea about the “Love in the Times of Cholera” movie.
I was going to mention “Stardust”, which Kailana already mentioned. I’m really looking forward to it, as well as to Neil Gaiman’s “Coraline”, being done by Henry Selick.
“His Dark Materials”, however,I’m very, very suspicious of. I hope I’m pleasantly surprised.
Stephanie – I do want to see The Other Boleyn Girl. I love period dramas too.
Dorothy W. – I had some mixed feelings about Atonement although it’s been so long since I read it that I can’t even remember what they were 🙂 I’d be up for seeing the movie.
Lynne – Good luck w/Atonement. I know my book group liked that one a lot.
Kailana – I haven’t read any Neil Gaiman so I’d probably see Stardust. What does everything think? Good thing?
Nancy – Exactly 🙂
Jenclair – I’m thinking I’ll see Stardust too.
JCR – I didn’t know that about 100 Years. I can’t even imagine how that would be filmed. I haven’t read any Auster though and need to remedy that!
Christine – The Road already? Wow. I agree, I think The Yacoubian Building could have a lot of potential as a film. I hope it does show over here.
Nymeth – I had heard about a movie version of Love in the Time of Cholera a long time ago and then nothing so I thought we were safe – I guess not. I haven’t read “His Dark Materials” but have heard that’s a very good read.
They’re doing Into the Wild? That one should be interesting and if it turns out to be a dud at least the scenery will be pretty. Atonement was a good book, could be a good movie too.
I can’t wait for Atonement. I loved the book (it was my #1 read the year I read it) and I just watched the trailer and it looks great.
I seldom get excited about a book being turned into a movie, myself, although lately I seem to end up following up a book with a viewing of the movie just to see the differences. That makes it a little more fun. I heard The Time-Traveler’s Wife is going to be movie-ized. Hmm, that could end up falling at either end of the spectrum.
Stefanie – I didn’t read Into the Wild but I could imagine the scenery would be amazing in that movie.
Les in NE – I haven’t seen the trailer! I’m going to look for that.
Nancy, aka Bookfool – Wasn’t Brad Pitt associated with Time Traveler’s Wife? Shudders…. I wonder what happened with that.
Time Traveller’s wife is sheduled for 2008.
Director : Robert Schwentke
Only Cast (sort of confirmed) : Rachel McAdams … Clare Abshire
Gavin – Look at you Mr. Detective 🙂 Thanks for the heads up. Have you read this book? It’s really good.
Haha. Just a simple trip to imdb 🙂
I haven’t read the book, but it looks like one I should.
