I went to the library tonight to return some books I had checked out before the holidays and while I was there I looked through their list of books that will be hitting the shelves soon or will arrive within the next two months. I don’t always look at the list, I kind of like being surprised by what shows up on the new bookshelves, but I couldn’t resist tonight.
Here are some books that sound like good reads:
- Tales from the Town of Widows by James Cañon
- The Fabric of the Night by Cristoph Peters
- Returning to Earth by Jim Harrison
- Silent in the Grave by Deanna Raybourn
- The Teahouse Fire by Ellis Avery
- The Mathematics of Love by Emma Darwin
- Love is a Mix Tape by Rob Sheffield
- Charity Girl by Michael Lowenthal
- The Echo Maker by Richard Powers
My library lets you place holds on up to 10 books. Yes, they are evil and it should be limitless, especially for frequent patrons like me don’t you think? Heh. Anyway, I’ve got several other holds already and it’s not as if I’m going to run out of books anytime soon. If anyone has read any of those books already please share your thoughts.
Wow, never heard of any of them. How out of the loop am I? lol Off to Amazon to investigate.
I got about halfway through The Echo Maker and wasn’t impressed. It was a compelling story, but he just didn’t engage me, make me care about the characters.
I haven’t heard of any of them either!! Luckily my library allows us 20 requests/holds!
I’ve only heard of The Echo Maker. I remember the title but not anything about it. My library allows 50 holds. It’s dangerous!
I just mentioned Silent in the Grave over on my site yesterday!(My library got it in the day before and as soon as I saw it on the shelving cart I scooped it up!) It looks good, but it’s a little over five hundred pages so you need to have some time with it, I think.
I want to read The Echo Maker. The other titles are intriguing.
Only ten books! I am not sure there is a limit at my library, though I do want to try and keep most books on a list rather than to be held for me (since things get out of control otherwise…they all come available at once). I read a good review of the Powers, and as it is set in NE I might give it a try. I also thought Charity Girl looked interesting. I will have to check out the other links! Thanks for sharing them.
Andi – Oh do let me know if you end up getting one of those books. Diana – Thanks for the heads up. Marg & Sassy – I’m seriously jealous of you guys… 20 & 50 holds? So not fair 🙂 Chelle – Yes, the 500+ pg. is a bit daunting. That’s one reason I may want to buy it and not get it from the library. Stefanie & Danielle – The Echo Maker does sound good doesn’t it? I may have to put a hold on that one. I do need to be careful with the holds too because of course they all tend to come in at once.
I haven’t heard of any of these, but Charity Girl sounds interesting. I got a call yesterday that “Never Fear” by Scott Frost is waiting for me at the library to pick up, yeah! I have to go there today, can’t wait any longer. 🙂 I am also the first on the que for the “Shaman’s Bones” at Allen Library that should be in next week.
As always a very interesting list and good finds!
I’ve only heard of the Jim Harrison book. I’ll be interested in your opinion, if you get to it. I’ve added it to my Amazon wishlist.
As far as library holds, I’ve never asked if there’s a limit. I don’t utilize that feature of the library, as I have so many of my own books to read. I figure, if I stumble on something on the New Release shelf while I’m in the library getting books for my hubby, I’ll snag it. Sometimes I read it and sometimes it gets returned unread. With all the challenges I’m participating in right now, I shouldn’t be allowed to step foot in a library! 😉
Some of these sound good. I have a few things coming from the Library. My books by Laurell K hamilton are my secret pleasure reads. She writes a mean sex scene in the midst of all kinds of metaphysic drama. And, they are non-thinking books. Also, the 13th Tale should be coming soon.
Shadan – Yeah, you’ll have to tell me how you like Never Fear. Christine – thanks girl. Les in ne – I think I should be banned from the library for a while too but I pass by it every day so it’s kind of hard to not stop in and visit at least once a week 🙂 Nancy – I have read 3 or 4 Hamilton books. Too true, one minute Anita’s practically fought to death with a demon but in the next page she’ll be making out like crazy 🙂 Fun times.
I see you struggling with getting through your stack again this year with that choice to tempt you at the library! I feel so lucky that my library is awful and only stocks about 2 books I’d give the time of day to!
What a great post, I had fun checking out all those new titles. I think Tales From The Town of Widows looks interesting and Love is a Mix tape is going on my TBR list! Thanks.
p.s. – You new blog looks great!
This is a great blog! I just found it by chance! Excellent writing and format. I will definately come back to read more! Great job!
Claire – I know, I’ve got issues 🙂 Sheri – Aw, thank you! The cover for Love is a Mix Tape is quite cool too don’t you think. JCR – Thank you so much! I’ll have to stop by and visit your blog 🙂
Never heard of those books…good. More to add to my list of books to maybe buy. Not sure if that is a good thing. LOL!!
I read and loved the History Of Love. It’s a historical drama/romance novel by Darwin’s (great? ) grand daughter that interwines two times- the early 1800s up to after Waterloo and the recent past. If you lied A.S Byatt’s Possession or Ian McEwan’s Atonement, I’d reccomend it.
apologies for the typos- liked and recommend were what I meant!
Kisane – I know, my TBR list is miles long 🙂 Sarah – That’s not the same History of Love by Nicole Krauss is it? And, I have read Possession which I loved. I was a bit meh on Atonement though. I much preferred Saturday. Anyway thank you for the suggestions though, always looking 🙂
My comment was riddled with typos- it was rather early in the morning 🙁
My comment was re The Mathematics Of Love. The History of Love is a seperate and very moving book also involving lovers through time (hence the slip!)
That’s great, and I too am unfamilar with almost all those titles. I just found your blog and love it, so I’ll definitely be coming back. So you are more of a library person than a purchase-the-book-brand-new person?
