Hello and happy 2024! I hope you’re ringing in the new year with a great pile of books. I love to start the new year with a new book and this morning I enjoyed my coffee while reading Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher.
So many of you have recommended this one and although I’ve heard of Rosamund Pilcher’s books for a long time, this is the first time I’m reading one of her books.
“The village was Debtor in Hampshire, and here Elfrida had come to live eighteen months ago, leaving London forever and making for herself a new life. At first she had felt a bit solitary, but now she couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. From time to time, old acquaintances from her theater days made the intrepid journey from the city and came to stay with her, sleeping on the lumpy divan in the time back bedroom that she called her work-room, which was where she kept her sewing machine and earned a bit of pin money making elaborate and beautiful cushions for an interior decorating firm in Sloan Street.â€
So why did I choose this book? Aside the recommendations, this sounded like a comfort read and so far it’s been that. I have enjoyed hearing about how Elfrida has encountered neighbors and made new friends. I’ll keep you posted on what I think of the story as I continue with it. Let me know if you’ve read this one or any other of Pilcher’s books that you recommend.
Aside from starting a new book we also went out for bookstore visits yesterday and today. What a wonderful way to say good bye to last year and welcome a new year.
I hope you are starting some fantastic reads and my next post I’ll tell you about all the books that I added to my shelves in December.
Iliana, WINTER SOLSTICE is a great book. I read it a long time ago and maybe it’s time to revisit it again. I know that many have been reading various PIlcher books in the last year or so. I’ve read several of this author’s books way, way back. I do recall that I liked COMING HOME. It’s a long one though. And I think it’s been almost 30 years since I read it. 🙂
I love this particular Rosamunde Pilcher! I also love several of her shorter novels like Snow in April, Sleeping Tiger, and The Day of the Storm. Happy reading this one. 😀
A bookstore visit to end the year and start the new one sounds perfect! And your first book for the year sounds like a good fit too. I don’t think I’ve read anything by Rosamunde Pilcher. I hope you continue to enjoy it!
Happy New Year, Iliana! Like you, I like the idea of starting a new year with a new book. I’ve just started reading The Mystery Guest by Nita Prose and I’m enjoying it so far. I’ve not read anything by Rosamunde Pilcher so I’ll have to check out her books.
I’ve never read this author. It’s lovely to pick a comfort read for your first read of the year.
Kay – I’m only about 30 pages in but I am already in love with the setting. If this turns out to be a great read as I’m expecting it to be then I’ll definitely look for more of her books although I do think they are all kind of chunksters aren’t they? Well, as long as they are good!
Lark – Oh good to know she also wrote some shorter novels. So glad to hear you also really enjoyed this one though. Seems like this is a crowd pleaser so I’m really happy I chose it as my first read of the year!
Literary Feline – I was telling my husband that this should be our new Christmas tradition! haha.. I promise to keep you posted on this one but so far it’s really good!
Melody – Happy New Year! It’s great to kind of set up the new year with a new book isn’t it? I still need to read something by Nita Prose and glad to hear your first book of the year is going well so far!
Deb Nance at Readerbuzz – I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to discover her but so far it is turning out to be a good comfort read.
I read Winter Solstice in January two years ago and thought it was fabulous. 5 stars! Last January I read Coming Home, which is also a very good novel by Pilcher. Maybe I should reread September, which is a follow-up (I think!) to The Shell Seekers, which I also read last year. I love her settings and her characters are so well-developed. Enjoy!
Nice to hear picking up a recommendation is paying off! I’ve never heard of this author before. I should look into her.
