Ok, what is going on with my this reading month? It has been going at a snail’s pace. I’ve only finished one book so far, a very good mystery which I’ll tell you about soon, but other than that I can’t seem to finish any books and what’s worse I think I’m coming up to my first DNF book of the year.
Has anyone read Sister Pelagia and the Red Cockrel by Boris Akunin? I am about 24 pages into it and am just not really interested. I usually have a 30-40 page rule you know. I wanted to read more because this is a selection for my mystery book group but right now I just want a juicy story I can sink into. The kind where you read and read and read and you don’t want to stop or can’t stop.
I still have a couple of other books going on but they aren’t really calling my name either. Hmm, I think I need to change direction with my reading for tonight and pick up something totally different. I’ll let you know what I end up doing but in the meantime, how about you. Have you had any DNF books already this year?
I don’t have them often, but when I do, it pains me! I had to turn off an audio of Murakami not long ago. He just isn’t an author you can listen to I guess. But here is the deal…too many books, too little time. You have to move on!
No I have managed to finish all mine so far, but there were a couple I did wonder why I bothered to though.
My reading is going great guns at the moment. I think I am spurred on by the New Year and wanting to get things done.
I have finished 7 books since January 1st and another nearly done. I doubt I will manage to stay at this pace for good though.
I’ve only finished one book so far this year too. It is getting a little frustrating. I’ve been reading but it seems all the books are long or ones I just started. Maybe I can finish one this weekend.
It sounds like heading in a new direction is a good idea. I hope you are able to find something you love! It’s frustrating when you hit a patch where nothing seems right.
It is hard when you are picking up a new book with hopeful thoughts of it being enjoyable. I think your rule is a good one. Time to find something new!
I’ve read a few good books already, and have another couple that I’ve read part of…and I’m not sure where to go from there. I picked up last years Maisie Dobbs installment last night and it grabbed me right away! I hope you find something that grabs you as much.
I think January’s a slow month for a lot of people in all sorts of ways. Sounds like you should be looking for something new. I can’t recall if you’ve read Fred Vargas (mystery)? A Vargas book is the only book I’ve read wholly this year.
I’ve thought about how slow I’ve been reading…this month, but I think I’m ok with that.
I haven’t finished many books this year yet either, but I’m enjoying what I’m reading, so that’s okay. I hope you find something that really grabs you. That’s what I’ve been in the mood for too!
I don’t have any DNF in 2010…yet. I’m actually just learning that I can give up on a book so this year I will definitely set a record since I struggled through any book I started last year!
I’m planning on trying out the first in Akunin’s Sister Pelagia series this year (I’ve read a couple of his other mystery series), so I hope it grabs me a bit more! As for the two Akunin I’ve read, while I’ve enjoy them, I definitely wouldn’t call them juicy. So I think it’s just not the right time for you! 🙂
I’ve had two abandoned books this month (I’ve decided to start tracking them this year, and publish a post at the end of every month with the details). The first in a mystery series, The Salaryman’s Wife, and then Ahab’s Wife. (I just noticed a theme in the titles, lol.) In both instances, the writing just didn’t do it for me at all.
I know the feeling! Sometimes you just have to completely change reading directions to shake things up. Good luck getting hooked on something fabulous!
Change direction! Change direction! Read a graphic novel…that’s what I do. I don’t have any DNFs yet, but I typically toss ’em and keep going or I stall out and end up miserable.
I’ve had three DNFs this year already!! Thankfully all were from the library and I hadn’t wasted any money buying them. I go by the 30 page rule as well, before I just used to read on even though I wasn’t interested – not a good idea because there are so many good books in the world waiting to be read!
I bought a Sister Pelegia book for my wife for Christmas 2008 and she had the same experience. She has wide reading tastes and I rarely ever miss with her, but this one just wasn’t clicking with her and so she just could finish it.
That should be “could not” finish it. 🙂
sorry to hear you DNF this one. No DNF’s for me this year yet.
I would love to have your reading month right now! I haven’t finished one adult book yet this month. *sigh* I hope next month is better for the both of us.
I just had my first DNF of the year with Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters. I’m reading fairly quickly this month; December was a slow one for me, though.
No, I haven’t read this one, but I have had a rash of bad books lately. I can’t seem to get past the first 40-50 pages. Boring, boring. I sometimes think it’s me, that my mind is not focused. Do you ever think that?
So I know that you’re deep in the Hunger Games right now but I just ahve to stop by and say my current reading obsession ‘Liar’ by Justine Larbalestier is just like what you described wanting. I can not stop reading it, it’s such a meaty story with twist and turns.
I’ve never even heard of that book but don’t feel too bad. We all go through periods where no big seems to catch our interest. Keep trying new ones until you get that gripping read you are looking for and then retry those other ones.
