I mentioned that I was at Borders on the weekend and was able to jot down some titles that I think I need to get soon. Or, hopefully Santa is reading this post. I don’t know how new the books are but I hadn’t seen them before so they are new to me. Although there is one new book that doesn’t come out until next year so let’s start with that one.
- Clara and Mr. Tiffany by Susan Vreeland. I’ve had the pleasure of hearing the author talk at an event several years ago and really enjoyed hearing about her background in art and how she brings that into her stories. I’ve read a few of her books and have loved them so of course I can’t wait to read this one. This title comes out in January.
- Heartbroke Bay by Lynn D’Urso. A novel about a woman in the Alaskan wilderness during the Gold Rush of 1898. I’m normally not into survival type stories and “Alaskan wilderness” sort of screams that to me but I don’t know, this sounds very different from my usual read.
- The Cookbook Collector by Allegra Goodman. I barely saw what the book was about but just I like the author’s writing so I want to read this one. The story is about rare-book collecting so that’s another plus.
- Chosen by Chandra Hoffman. A story of a case worker who becomes very emotionally involved in the lives of her clients. This already sounds like it has the potential to be a good book for discussion.
- Under the Poppy by Kathe Koja. Late 19th Century Brussels, a puppeteer, a brothel, oh my this sounds like it will have a lot of juicy drama.
- Family Album by Penelope Lively. I’ve read one of her books which I really like and I’ve been meaning to try another so this one about family dynamics and how everyone remembers things differently seems like it’d be a great read.
- How to Read the Air by Dinaw Mengestu. I found his first novel a very good account of the immigrant experience. I believe this one will probably explore more of the same themes and I can’t wait to read it.
Actually I didn’t make it past the M’s on the shelves so I’m sure I have more books for Santa but this is a good start don’t you think? Have you read any of these and do you have one to recommend?

The Cookbook Collector is most definitely on my list, and I’m interested to read more about How to Read the Air, too!
Oh, dear. You are so good at getting me into trouble. I am into survival stories and Alaska, so Heartbroke Bay is going straight onto the wishlist. Hope Santa is good to you!!
If Santa listens to you, could you ask him for a copy of Clara and Mr Tiffany for me as well? LOL great list
You’ve reminded me that I wanted to read more Penelope Lively!
As you seem to have been a good girl this year, I am sure Santa will read your list and leave a few presents in your stocking 🙂
I’ve not been to a bookstore in months! I’m afraid I would be overwhelmed by all the new books. I’m glad to hear Susan Vreeland is coming out with a new book–I’ve read and enjoyed several of her books as well.
I haven’t read a single one of those, but The Cookbook Collector is on my list as well!
I have been trying to decide what books I want, too. I normally just get gift cards and having a shopping spree after the holidays, though…
I hope Santa gives you the books you want!
Coffee & a Book Chick -Have you seen the cover on it? Isn’t it pretty too? 🙂
Bookfook, aka Nancy – that’s my secret mission 🙂 I’m surprised how interesting that Alaska book sounds to me. I may have to read that one during our hot Texas summers! haha.
diane – I’ll let him know 🙂
jenclair – She’s good isn’t she? I love family dramas so this sounds good.
Stefanie – Yep, I’ve been a very good bookgirl. We just won’t mention the pigging out on chocolate and overdue library books 🙂
Danielle – Oh wow, you are a strong woman to not go to the bookstore! I didn’t realize you hadn’t been in months. I bet next time you go you’ll have to spend several hours there!
Sandy – That one looks good right? I love the premise.
Kailana – I wouldn’t mind gift cards to the bookstores! I think one year I didn’t get any books or gift cards to bookstores. I’m thinking do my friends and family not know me?! haha.. I understand though, they must think I have every book I could possibly need.
bookworm – Me too 🙂 Hope you get lots of goodies too!
I haven’t read any of these but I sure hope Santa reads this post and brings them for you!
