Today’s post is an update on what I’m currently reading. If the picture seems somewhat familiar it’s because Vanishing Girls by Lauren Oliver has been one of my current reads forever it seems. What’s worse is that I’m so near the end haven’t felt the urgency to finish the book.
I think my overall problem with this novel is that I just can’t root for any of the characters. I do plan to finish this book, especially as I have a theory of what the “mystery” is and I want to see if I’m right, but I also have these other books vying for my attention.
Midwinter Blood by Mons Kallentoft is a Swedish thriller, featuring Malin Fors, a thirtysomething divorced mother serving on the police force in a remote town. This book could have used some editing. It feels too long and the writer goes on and on about the cold. I know he must want to set the scene but I get it – it’s really cold in Sweden. This didn’t bother me too much at the beginning but now past 400 pages and we are still talking about the cold and it’s getting a bit tiresome.
On my Kindle is The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald. This is another Swedish book but quite different from the crime books I’m used to and I like the change. Sara travels to Iowa to visit her bookworm pen pal only to find out her friend has just died. I haven’t gotten very far into this one but I like the set up and hope I continue to enjoy it.
Finally, the latest book I added to the pile is No One Gets Out Alive by Adam Neville and this counts as one of my R.I.P. Reads. Poor Stephanie has had to sublet a room in a dilapidated house. Her landlord is creepy and worse what are those noises at night? Yep, this is a good choice for the R.I.P. challenge.
So have you read any of these? What about you, what are you reading lately?
I hate it when I’m in the situation you are in with Vanishing Girls. You want to finish but can’t seem to get there. You want to know the end, but the process is tiresomely long. I’ve had a few like that this year. I liked them well enough, but wasn’t overly enthused. I like to be enthused. LOL
I’m interested in The Readers of Broken Wheel; saw a review elsewhere that caught my eye. I tried No One Gets Out Alive, but it was too creepy for me. DNF
Kay – I really hate it when that happens too because I just feel like it is a chore to finish the book and although I typically don’t force myself to finish books when I’m so close to the end I do make an exception.
Jenclair – I don’t think I would read No One Gets Out Alive if I lived alone or in some older house with lots of noises. I actually had to find a different read for my evening reading so I won’t have any crazy dreams from that book.
