I started reading Vanishing Girls by Lauren Oliver last week. It’s a YA novel about two sisters whose relationship has drastically changed after a car accident. The novel alternates between the voices of the two sisters and two different time periods so early on in the story I found myself going back to the beginning of each chapter to make sure I had the right person and time frame. I’m about half way through this book.
I’m also reading The Year My Mother Came Back by Alice Eve Cohen. This memoir is about a woman who is going through some major life events and all of a sudden she starts to see her mother, who’s been dead for thirty years. I was looking for a nonfiction book and ended up with this one. I don’t think I necessarily would have picked it up as it deals with health issues and I have a hard time reading about those but I don’t want to put this down now. It’s very readable.
My audiobook is The Neighbor by Lisa Gardner. This case has Sgt. Det. D.D. Warren looking into the disappearance of a young housewife. Who would want to harm this seemingly normal family? The seconds are ticking by and I have no clue what’s going to happen next. This is turning out to be a good one for when I’m on the treadmill. Pretty straightforward plot and has kept my attention.
As I mentioned in my previous post I’m also reading Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King. Too early to tell much about this one but I’ll keep you posted.
Of course, I wouldn’t mind adding more books to my current reads. I’m really in the mood for a good nonfiction book (not memoir) so if you have a good one to recommend let me know. And, I feel like I need one of my regular mystery series on hand as well.
How about you, what are you reading?
Vanishing Girls sounds interesting! I can’t wait to hear what you’ll think of it.
I’m still on the fence about reading Mr Mercedes; I know it’s a King book but I’ve also heard it’s quite different from his other works. I’ll be curious to hear your thoughts on it. 🙂
I’ve read 3 by Lisa Gardner and enjoyed two of them, the other was a little dark for me. Her books are suspenseful; hope you continue to enjoy this one. I have The Year My Mother Came Back, but for some reason have left it in the TBR pile. Since you are finding it readable, maybe I’ll get to it sooner rather than later. 🙂
The Lisa Gardner book sounds good. Vanishing Girls sounds interesting too–although confusing. I am currently reading The Gracekeepers by Kirsty Logan. It’s interesting so far. Not a fast read, at least for me. I’d like to finish it before next week, but we’ll see.
Glad to hear some brief thoughts on The Year My Mother Came Back. I got it unsolicited from the publisher and have debated on whether to keep it in my stack or not. Maybe I’ll pick it up and see if it’s as quick for me as it has been for you. One of these days I’ll get to Mr. Mercedes…but I feel like I have so many of his backlist books to read first! 🙂
I want to read Mr. Mercedes myself but haven’t taken the time yet. I will be looking forward to your thoughts when you finish. I also have Vanishing Girls on my kindle and am really looking forward to reading it soon. It looks like you have lots of really great reading ahead of you-enjoy!!
I have been curious about Year My Mother Came Back, but like you, I don’t really want to read a book about health issues. Looks like you are enjoying it anyways so I will take a look at it.
