I’m still on a bit of a mystery kick left over from my June mystery reads but I’ve ventured out and started a couple of other books too.
For mysteries I’m about halfway through The Fourth Man by K.O. Dahl. The mystery had started off quite good and exciting but I somehow lost a bit of steam while reading this one. It’s still good but Frank Frolich, the Detective Inspector of the Oslo Police department has spent quite a bit of time on a suspension of sorts because he got very friendly with a woman who is now wanted in connection with a crime. Oh detective, you knew this was bound to happen.
My other read is The School fo essential Ingredients by Erica Bauermeister. Hm, I don’t know how to say this but I’m not really loving this book. I know everyone in blogland raved about this one and the premise is great and all but I’m not that into it. I will finish it and who knows maybe I’ll still fall in love with it so let’s see what happens.
Finally, I felt like I needed something a bit different in my mix of reading and I chose How To Read The Air by Dinaw Mengestu. Just started it last night but it’s about a young, Ethiopian couple who’ve spent most of their first year of marriage apart and are now embarking on a road trip to find a new home and a new American identity. I read his debut novel a couple of years ago and really loved it so I expect a lot from this one.
What about you, what are you reading now?
I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on “The Fourth Man”.
I loved that book by Erica Bauermeister, and I knew she has a new book out now but I just haven’t got around to that. I’m still reading “The Lake” by Banana Yoshimoto; you can say I’m devouring her prose (slowly) and I hope to finish it by this week. We shall see… 😉
Oh… I just borrowed that book by Bauermeister based on all the fab reviews I have been seeing of her new book!
I wasn’t all that crazy about School of Essential Ingredients either. A better book with a similar premis is The Love Goddess’ Cooking School by Melissa Senate.
I have been on a mystery kick too–I am finally changing it up a bit!
How to Read the Air sounds interesting and I like the title too. Hope it finished as good as it began.
I haven’t read The School of Essential Ingredients, yet. It’s one of those books that got so many rave reviews I’m just a little scared of it. It’s hard to go into the reading without high expectations so I keep putting it off.
I liked the audio of School of Essential Ingredients as well as How to Read the Air – both worked well on audio.
I’ve been in the mood for a good thriller lately or a good mystery. I can’t seem to decide 🙂 I’m thinking that it is time to read another Sue Grafton mystery and maybe that will fit my moody reading.
Melody – I know you loved the Erica Baumeister book. Maybe I should have waited to read it another time. Can’t wait to hear what you think of Banana’s book. I really want to read that one!
Marg – I hope you’ll enjoy it. It’s not horrible but somehow it’s not really what I expected I think and that’s what sort of throwing me off.
Melanie – Thanks for the tip! I have read one of Melissa’s books but it’s been a long while back. I do remember it was a fun chick lit book though.
Stephanie – I think I’m ready for a bit of variety in my reading too!
Stefanie – It is a great title isn’t it? I finally read a bit more last night and so far it’s great!
Bookfool, aka Nancy – Exactly! I think I should have put it off a bit longer. My expectations were probably way too high.
(Diane) BibliophileBytheSea – I remember reading your review of the Dinaw Mengetsu book. I’m so excited to read this one.
Samantha – Oh wow, I haven’t read Sue Grafton in forever! I think I’m only up to C in her series so a long ways to go. You’ll have to let us know if you find a good thriller 🙂
I haven’t yet read SCHOOL OF ESSENTIAL INGREDIENTS, but did read (and get much more out of than I expected) JOY FOR BEGINNERS.
My understanding is that SCHOOL is organized like JOY, with each chapter focusing on a different main character. There were some chapters of JOY which really moved me, and others that were far lighter. Perhaps each reader connects with different characters?
I hope it turns around for you.
