For a while there I was only reading one book at a time but I’m back to jumping between settings and characters. Here’s an update on some of my current reads.
You guys were not kidding when you said The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot was excellent. I finished that on the weekend and am amazed at how one woman helped science so much and yet her family suffered by not knowing what was happening. A review of this one to come.
Aside from my Virago book that I mentioned in my previous post, I’m about half way through The Summer Book by Tove Jansson for the upcoming Slaves of Golconda discussion. It is filled with wonderful descriptions of the scenery of the island.
I’m still reading The Lies That Bind by Kate Carlisle and as I haven’t had the chance to do much bookbinding lately this mystery is helping me feel like I’m in the studio, unraveling thread, choosing paper and wiping glue off on my jeans (yes, I have a wonderful apron but it typically decorates the entrance to my studio).
Finally, I’m reading a book I wasn’t sure I even wanted to read but it’s for a book group, Pronto by Elmore Leonard. Oddly enough even though I don’t really like this type of book (mafia, hit guys, and bookies) I feel like I’m flying through this book. So I guess that is something.
What about you? What good books are you into this week?
I’ve recently finished The Thousand Autumn of Jacob de Zoet, Grave Secrets by Charlaine Harris, and the latest Honor Harrington by David Weber–all of which I very much enjoyed! Still reading The Vigorous Mind and my yoga books in short installments.
Henrietta is really what non-fiction is all about. We read it for our book club and it was mass chaos when we were all discussing (all at one time, in loud, expressive voices!). I’m listening to Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter, another book club read, and reading Lauren Oliver’s new book Delirium (after having totally been blown away by Before I Fall).
I am trying to read the newspapers from the last two weeks.
I am also trying to start Redemption by Mr. O’Connor for my Wars Reading Challenge
I desperately want to read the Henrietta Lacks one. It definitely is an interesting subject. Love Tove Jansson. I picked The Summer Book up recently to read.
Henrietta was really good, huh? I am glad that I read it last year!
Looking forward to you re thoughts on these books especially the Rebecca Skloot one. I’m currently immersed in a memoir called Half in Love.
I read quite a bit of the Jansson today but decided to break it up over the weekend so not as to devour it all at once. I really need to read the Skloot book, too.
I hope you like The Summer Book! I read it about a week ago and enjoyed it very much. I’m going to need to review the book before I post, though, as I’ve read so much in between.
I’ve read so many great reviews of the Henrietta Lacks book. I look forward to your thoughts and am glad to hear you enjoyed it.
