It looks like I’m still on a “just one book” kick. I sort of miss having several books in progress but I think with all the crafting stuff I have going on it’s probably best that I just stick with one book. Well, I say that now but let’s see how long this lasts.
I’ve just started The Weight of Heaven by Thrity Umrigar, which I won from a giveaway Serena hosted a while back. I had read The Space Between Us a few years ago and enjoyed discussing that novel with my book group so I was definitely looking forward to this book.
“A few days after Benny’s death, Ellie and Frank Benton broke into separate people. Although they didn’t know it then. At that time, all they could do was concentrate on getting through each bewildering day, fighting to suppress the ugly memories that burst to the surface like fish above water. On the day of the funeral, Frank urged himself to go up to Ellie and say something brave and consoling to her, something that would reassure her that he understood, that he did not blame her for what had happened. But he was felled by a clear, sharp thought: He didn’t know how.”
The story starts off with a couple who’ve lost their only child and after a year of mourning decide to relocate to India. The husband hopes he can forgive his wife as he blames her for the child’s death and the wife hopes that a new change of scenery may help to repair their marriage.
I’m really just getting into the story and already I can tell there will be a lot of emotional drama as the couple tries to navigate life in a new country, new customs and a new way of looking at one another.
Have you read this book? What did you think?
I haven’t read it but it sounds good – looking forward to hear what you think of it!
I haven’t heard of it but it sounds good. I’m actually kind of a sucker for emotional drama…! Not sure what that says about me. 😉
So, you’re a multi-book gal, huh? I might be able to read a fiction and non-fiction book at same time, but mostly I’m a one-book gal.
Hope your week is going lovely, Iliana!
I checked this book out from the library and didn’t manage to read it either time. I’m so sad about that as I read your synopsis and am reminded of how much the storyline appealed to me. I look forward to your thoughts and to reading it one day soon.
I start some books, but stick to one to finish it.
I have been wanting to read this author, be cause i have read rave reviews, of her books. I hope you enjoy it.
Willa – So far I’m enjoying it. There is one big development already which I’m curious how it will play out.
Trish – Me too! haha… And, yep, I love have several books going on. I remember I used to think that was weird! haha.
Kathleen – That happens to me all the time. I’m actually on a library ban for now to hopefully get through a bit more of my stacks. So hard to do as I pass the library almost on a daily basis.
veens – So far I think I liked The Space Between Us better but who knows I may be blown away by this one when I’ve finished. I’ll keep you posted!
I haven’t read it but it the book sounds like a good one. Btw, I always admire people who can read more than one book at one time. Me, I can only do one book at a time or I might lose focus. Anyway, have a good reading week ahead.
I’ve read The Space Between Us and really liked it so I might have to get this one too. Although anything to do with children being hurt or dying makes me cry these days, so on the other hand perhaps I should skip it!
I’m looking forward to your thoughts on this book. Serena told me I have to read it.
I enjoyed The Weight of Heaven quite a bit. It really makes one think. I did like The Space Between Us better though–it had more of an emotional impact on me.
I have a copy (ARC!) of The Space Between Us and have been meaning to get to it for years. This one sounds like it might be good, too, but I’m not sure if it would hit too close to home for me. I’ll wait to hear what you think once you’ve finished. Thank goodness my marriage survived our loss.
