My latest books all happen to be challenge reads so I’ve got a bit of everything going on.
First, I’ve been enjoying Women With Big Eyes by Angeles Mastretta. It was a bit strange at first to get used to this story because it really does seem like a series of short stories all connected with a theme of women telling their side of the story. Once I got used to the style I’ve enjoyed stepping into the world of these women. I feel like I know some of them. This is for the Mexico 2010 challenge.
My other read takes me across the world to Paris, France where I’m following the footsteps of Private Investigator, Aimee Leduc in Murder in the Marais. I stop in the cafes and can almost taste the croissants but my attention is on the horrible murder Aimee is trying to solve. This is for the Paris in July experience.
Yesterday I spent most of the afternoon reading the graphic memoir, The Impostor’s Daughter by Laurie Sandell. What an interesting life she’s had. I still find it hard to believe that she was able to write about her family and can still have a relationship with them. Lots of ups and downs but it looks like they were able to get past the lies and hurts. Anyway, this one is for my Graphic Novels challenge.
Finally, I’m reading Alone With You by Marisa Silver. I’ve only read a couple of the short stories in this collection and I can’t seem to find a thread that connects all of these and that’s usually when I have a bit of a harder time with short stories. Anyway, I’ll keep going and we’ll see what happens in the end. This counts for my Short Story challenge.
So those are my current reads. I’m already taking peeks at my shelves to see which book to add in next. How about you, have you read some of these? What did you think?
Any challenges I’ve joined this year are pretty much out of the window, I’m afraid. I am hopefully going to at least join in on Carl’s RIP challenge though. It sounds like you’re making great progress–I’m especially interested in the Cara Black book–I’ve read one of her mysteries and always intended to read more.
I haven’t read any of those, Iliana. They sound interesting, especially The Imposter’s Daughter. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on them! 🙂
I haven’t read any of these either, but I’m all over graphic novels and short stories. In fact, I am currently reading Jhumpa Lahiri’s “Unaccustomed Earth” which is a group of beautiful short stories. She would make anyone love short stories.
I think the Imposter’s Daughter sounds really interesting and like something that I should check out. Enjoy all of your reads!
I haven’t heard of any of these work, but they sound great.
I need to finish an ARC for August. It’s electronic, so it’s an adventure to read.
Danielle – I had started off the year doing really well with the challenges but then I just stalled – as usual! 🙂 I am not sure what to think of the Black mystery. Something has just happened which is seriously making me question the main character but I’ll wait to see how it pans out.
Melody – It was very good! I just finished it so I’ll try to have a review of it up soon 🙂
Sandy – You’ll have to add this one to your list then! And, I agree, Lahiri writes so well. I’ve read her book Interpreter of Maladies and loved it and that was before I really appreciated short stories!
Samantha – It was good. Not my favorite but very interesting.
Isabel – I can’t imagine an electronic ARC. I guess if I had an eReader that would be one thing but I refuse to read any on my computer even if I have a big screen. You’ll have to let us know how that goes!
Interesting trips you are taking this week.
I’m in England with The King’s Mistress. I can’t seem to put it down and I feel like Alice’s best friend who she doesn’t have. She’s certainly in a precarious spot supposedly for her protection. Can’t wait to find out what happens next.
Where the rest of us are failing to keep up with our challenges, you are striving ahead. Well done. I don’t think I will actually complete mine by the end of the year as I keep getting side tracked by new books!
I’ve not read any of these but am looking for graphic novel recommendations so will add The Imposter’s Daughter to my list to read.
Haven’t heard of The Impostor’s Daughter, but I’m game for anything Graphic Novely. 😀
Wisteria Leigh – I am a bit all over the place. I like that. Hope you are enjoying your time with the court life 🙂
vivienne – Watch, I still won’t finish them 🙂 The lure of new books is hard when it comes to challenges isn’t it.
Kathleen – I will have a review of it soon so you can see if it sounds good to you.
Andi – You haven’t heard of this one? Well, I’m shocked I tell you 🙂
The murder in Murder in the Marais is very disturbing, isn’t it! I found that crime — and where it leads Aimee in the contemporary part of the storyline (which I recall as something that comes out a ways on in the novel) — unsettling indeed. I’m reading the second in the series now and hope to finish later today or tomorrow. It took me some adjusting to get back into Aimee’s head, but I’m there now again, and I think I’ll have a hard time not wanting to go on with the series!
