I’ve finished a couple of books so currently I’ve only got one book going. Can you believe that? Just last week I think I was juggling six books. Anyway, I’ll have to tell you about those books soon.
One book I didn’t finish though was The Seville Communion. I tried. Normally I know within the first 30 or 40 pages if this is a book I want to continue reading but I got up to page 70 on this one and just lost all interest. I don’t know if it was also partly due to the fact that this was one of the six books I was juggling and the pacing of this seemed so much slower than the others that I just lost interest. So it goes back on my shelf and maybe I’ll give it another try later.
For now, I’ve have to amend two of my challenge lists which that book was supposed to be a part of. So for my What’s in a Name Challenge I’ve now chosen The Glimmer Palace by Beatrice Colin (a book with a name of a place), and for the Orbis Terrarum Challenge I’ve chosen The Book of Chameleons by Jose Eduardo Agualusa, a book set in Angola by an Angolan writer.
And, of course because I’m only reading one book currently (which I should be finishing soon) I feel like starting a bunch of new books. Oh the possibilities of good stories to be found! So here are the books that I’m leaning towards starting tonight, tomorrow…
- The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier. This is a Year of Reading Dangerously challenge selection, and am I so behind on this challenge! This is one of those books that seems to always come up when reading about banned books so of course I want to read it. heh.
- Mercy Street by Mariah Stewart. She has a lot of books out and I’ve always wanted to read one. I was lucky enough to get this one as an ARC so I’m looking forward to it.
- The Wise Woman by Philippa Gregory.
- Lady of Quality by Georgette Heyer.
Well, I hope the next new book will be a good one.
I just cannot imagine myself juggling six books at a time!! Maybe it works on graphic novels but definitely not novels, haha.
I’ve just added The Chocolate War to my BookMooch wishlist after clicking onto your link. I am also looking at Philippa Gregory’s other books after reading The Other Boleyn Girl. I hope you’ll enjoy The Wise Woman and I’ll look forward to reading your review on it soon. 🙂
Sorry to hear about the Perez-Reverte–that one doesn’t appeal to me as much as his other novels. I’ve got The Glimmer Palace on my library list, so I am waiting for a copy–I look forward to hearing what you think!
And have fun with lady of Quality!!
How fun to be able to start a whole bunch of books all at once! Enjoy! And if you choose Lady of Quality, I’ll bet you like it — I had a great time reading it myself.
Fast reading! Enjoy Robert Cormier. He rocks. 🙂
I saw an advertisement for The Glimmer Palace so I’ll be interested to know what you think of it. Wow, 6 books at a time!
Hope you decide to pick up that Perez-Reverte again sometime. If I remember correctly, it took me awhile to get into it, but I was glad I stayed with it. Great atmosphere, and interesting character development.
Haven’t read any of the books on your new list! Can’t wait to hear what you think of them.
I only enjoyed bits of The Seville Communion. It felt “lesser” than The Flander Planel and The Club Dumas – less mystery and intrigue – but I did liked the noirish femme fatale. 🙂
But it must be great to be able to sort through 6 books in process. I’m still trying to sort out 4 or 5.
I’ve heard a lot about Agualusa, but I’ve yet to read him. I look forward to your review of his book!
Melody – I think that was probably a bit too much too 🙂 I do much better with 3 – 4 books. haha. The Wise Woman sounds a bit different from other Gregory books although what do I know, this will be my second book by her!
Danielle – Doesn’t The Glimmer Palace sound good? I love the time frame and I think it’ll be interesting to read a book set in Germany at that time.
Dorothy W. – I actually got hooked on just one book and I’m almost done with it. I’ve seen so many of the new Heyer releases and they all sound so fun. I think I really need to start this one next.
Tiffany – yay! I am looking forward to it. It’s kind of neat too because I don’t really know much about the story so it’s kind of cool.
Tara – I swear that’s not my normal reading pace! ha,ha..
Mindy Withrow – You know, I was liking it but I really think it was my fault for reading too many books at once. I kept putting it aside and when I got back to it I had sort of lost interest. I did put it back on my TBR stack and will check it out again.
Dark Orpheus – A noirish femme fatale? I totally didn’t get to that part! ha,ha.. Ok, I promise I’m not getting rid of this book. Just setting it aside for the right time 🙂
Nymeth – The book sounds really interesting and I’m looking forward to it too!
I think I mentioned before that I’d found “The Seville Community’ something of a disappointment after his other books, although I did manage to finish it. The only one I’ve read form your pile of possibilities is ‘The Chocolate War’. it is not a ‘nice’ book but unfortunately one that rings only too true.
Oh yeah. The femme fatale in “Seville Communion” keeps her lighter tucked under her bra strap. It was oddly sexy. 🙂
I think I recommended The Book of Chameleons by Jose Eduardo Agualusa for the Dallas Bookgroup! 😉 I have it on my TBR pile..
Lady of Quality and The Wise Woman – both sound interesting too!
Let me know if you get through The Chocolate War. I haven’t had much luck, but I haven’t had much luck reading ANYTHING lately.
Ann (Table Talk) – Yes, I think you had told me that before about Seville Communion. I’ve only read the Flanders Panel so I don’t have much to compare it to but I’m thinking of maybe going with his Captain Altriste series. That sounds a bit more lively! 🙂
Dark Orpheus – Ooh, she sounds good 🙂
Christine – Oh wow, I didn’t even remember that girl. Well it sounds like a very interesting book. A bit odd but I like that sometimes!
Andi – Blame it on the heat! I didn’t start it yet but hopefully later this week. I’ll keep you posted!
