I hadn’t been to the library in a couple of months so the other day I thought it was time to break my library ban. You know I love the library but being that I have so many unread books I try to cut my library visits every so often so I’ll read more from my stacks.
Anyway I had to pick up some books for upcoming book groups and of course I also picked up a couple of other books I couldn’t leave behind on the shelf. Here’s what I got:
- Fieldwork by Mischa Berlinski. A crime novel set in Thailand.
- Pronto by Elmore Leonard. This isn’t really my type of crime novel but it’s for a book group and I’m willing to give it a go. I actually haven’t read anything by Leonard so I’m curious but I’m not getting my hopes up.
- The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. Am I the last person to read this book? I am so excited I found this one.
- The Storm by Margriet de Moor. A novel of two sisters set amidst the backdrop of a natural disaster in The Netherlands.
A bit of variety and I like that. Let me know if you’ve read any of these and what you thought. Of course wouldn’t you know it that today I also got a notice that I have a couple of more holds to pick up. It always works that way doesn’t it?
Have a wonderful weekend everyone! I’m going to try and enjoy mine as much as I can as life is about to get a lot more hectic for me as I’m going back to full time work. It’s been a while. Saturday I’ll post a journal prompt so hope you’ll check it out and I have an author guest post and book giveaway coming up in the next two posts so stay tuned!
Fieldwork is brilliant – one fo those books that was so good I get a little jolt of happiness when I see someone else has read/is reading it. 🙂
Carrie K. – Oh I’m so excited to hear you say that! Our last few books for my mystery book group have been underwhelming so I was getting a bit burnt out but now I’m excited. It’s actually our February read but I’ll start it soon.
Not the last person to read Henrietta Lacks because I haven’t yet either.
Enjoy your loot
I can’t believe you found the Henrietta Lacks on the shelf! There are still holds on it at my library.
Don’t think you are the last person to get “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”. I haven’t got it yet either! Enjoy them all!
I can personally vouch for Fieldwork and Henrietta. In Carrie’s words, they are both brilliant. I read Fieldwork long before I started blogging and I still remember it like I read it yesterday.
I haven’t read Henrietta yet, but will probably be the last in England. Especially as it was announced as one of the Channel 4 Book Club reads this year.
I hate getting my hold notice right AFTER I leave the library!! I hope you enjoy Henrietta Lacks–it was one of my favorites last year.
I want to read the Skloot book. I’ve heard so many good things about it. Have a great weekend!
I haven’t read any of them, but they sound interesting! I’m curious about the Skloot book, of which I’ve heard a lot.
Henrietta Lacks is really good. I am so excited so many people like it because there are some fairly scientific parts to it. I saw Rebecca Skloot speak at The Texas Book Festival…made me like the book even more.
I’m trying to be much more selective when it comes to library books as well and haven’t really borrowed many books from my public library since before the holidays. I’ve heard many good things about the Skloot book and I’m very curious about the Berlinski crime novel! Have a great weekend.
Henrietta Lacks is such a great read–it’s scientific, but Skloot not only has a wonderful voice of her own, but is pitch-perfect in capturing all the Lacks family members, who simply burst off the page in all their raucous imperfect glory. I think you’ll like it!
Nope – *I* will be the last person to read Henrietta Lacks 😛 Having said that I do really want to read it.
I’m so loving your blog!! Awesome!!

I’m surrounded by mysteries and am trying to take a look at other genres this year. I’ll be stopping by the library.

Enjoy your weekend and your library books 🙂
Oh, I think there will be a lot of us who haven’t read Henrietta Lacks yet. My stepsister is reading it for college–maybe freshman writing program? and is feeling “eh” about it. I told her BUT EVERYONE loves that book. Really? Who? Um, bloggers… 😉
Hope you’re having a great weekend Iliana!
I’m still waiting to read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. I recommended it to one of my faculty and he downloaded it before I could! Hoping it gets a good report. 😉
I haven’t read Henrietta Lacks, yet. As Trish said, I’m sure there are plenty of us. I am interested in it, though.
Hi Everyone – I’m sorry I didn’t get a chance to respond to all comments. I was so busy this weekend trying to get ready for my full-time job which starts on Monday. Yikes. I’m excited but it means trying to accomplish a lot more on the weekends now. Hope you all had a great weekend and I started the Henrietta Lacks book. So fascinating!! 🙂
Variety! love it. I still need to read the Henrietta Lacks book. Have fun!
The Henrietta Lacks book has received so much positive press. I can’t believe I never picked it up to read last year. I hope you enjoy it!
RE: Henrietta Lacks: Nope, you’re not the last one! Our library copy just now has gotten back on the shelf for the first time since the book was published. I’m planning to put it on the list for possible spring library book club selections, as that will give me a further push to read it.
What?! Do only people who have not yet read the Lacks book comment here? 😉
I want to read it. I laughed out loud at Trish’s comment.
Happy Library Books!
