We went to Half Price Books on Saturday and woo-hoo we even had to ask for a big box to carry out all of our treasures. My husband got several art and design books. You know, those heavy books. There is this one he got which sounds interesting so I may have to borrow it. Did you see the price too? At Amazon it’s $45 and he got it for $7.98!
Although I found a lot of books I wanted in the fiction section, I ended up buying all of my books from the clearance section for $1 or $2 a book. Now that’s a deal. Here are my finds:
- This Dame for Hire by Sandra Scoppettone
- The Grave Maurice by Martha Grimes
- The Old Contemptibles by Martha Grimes
- Criminals by Margot Livesey
- Taking Chances by Molly Keane
- The Hacienda by Lisa St. Aubin de Teran
- The Education of Harriet Hatfield by May Sarton
- The Last Kashmiri Rose by Barbara Cleverly
- The Samurai’s Wife by Laura Joh Rowland
- Love Song by Nikki Gemmell
So a couple of the Martha Grimes Richard Jury novels as I’m slowly making my way through the series. Same for the Laura Joh Rowland book. Nikki Gemmell is an author who hasn’t disappointed me in the past. Two new detectives to check out with the Scoppettone and Cleverly books and the others just sounded too good to pass up. I do love Half Price Books.
Unfortunately the weather is miserable today and I couldn’t meet up with my best friends for a movie night but it is a perfect day for curling up with a good book. So off I go to hopefully finish one of my Challenge reads.
I’ve never read Nikki Gemmel — she’s an Aussie, who lives in London like me. I remember her being a radio journalist on Triple J back when I lived in Australia and she had an awful little-girl voice that just grated on me. I have heard good things about her books though.
There aren’t any half-price book stores where I live, but when visiting my sister when she still lived outside of Seattle we visited one there. It was AWESOME!!
I don’t have a Half-Price Bookstore near my home in Michigan, but once a year I visit my sister for a week in Dallas, and I always spend several hours at the one there. It is huge and I always find plenty of bargains. You are fortunate to have one nearby.
Kim – My favorite of Nikki’s is “Losing Gemma”. I’ve found her books quite enjoyable.
Stephanie – I am quite spoiled. We have several HP Bookstores in the Dallas Metroplex area.
Brad – I feel for you without a Half Price books. Seriously every town should have one don’t you think? 🙂
I looooove the clearance section. I made quite a haul the last time I visited. The weather is sooo nasty, so I’ve been curled up in my electric blanket, reading The End of the Affair today. Love it (the weather and the book)! I know it sounds contradictory to say “oh the weather is nasty” and “I love it,” but oddly enough, I do! It’s novelty in Texas!
Way to go, Bookgirl. I’m like Brad, no half price bookstores even close. I guess I traded HP bookstores for no rush hour traffic. Usually, I think that’s a good trade, but there are days…
Oooooh, we need one in Australia. I haven’t heard of many of the books so I look forward to your reviews. It’s rainy where I am too, so my outdoor cinema trip has been postponed. I’ll be curled up with a good book instead also. Enjoy!
Iliana we must be on the same wave length or something because I went to HP Books over the weekend too! I didn’t need a big box but we did fill a grocery bag! Love the clearance books!
I keep meaning to post about my visit to Half-Price Books while we were in Fort Worth last month. I love that store and I especially love their new location on Hulen Street.
Winter is here, too. It was negative 3 this morning and is currently zero. Got more snow last night, so that’s about 4-5″ this weekend. BRRRRRR.
Andi – Especially the store at NW Highway has the best clearance section don’t you think? That’s where I was 🙂
Booklogged – Oh not having to deal with rush hour traffic is a good thing indeed. I can understand that.
Litacquisitionist – Good thing when we have weather woes we can always rely on books right? 🙂
Stefanie – I can’t wait until you post on your finds. Great minds think alike!
Les – I’ve heard really good things about the HP in Ft.Worth but haven’t made it out there. Maybe next time I go on a museum visit I’ll have to check it out. Stay warm!
Ooh, how pretty is this place?
I find it really hard to walk out of Half Price Books without a few great finds. I have also discovered their great magazine section…they are saving me some money on my creative mag addiction!
Now you have given me more interesting finds for me to check out!
I love $1 books! Once a year in the summer, here in my neck of the woods there is a huge library sale where are can find fantastic reads for a quarter!
Happy Reading!
Amanda
I wish we had one of those here! Look like you got some great books!! I love getting those big coffee table sorts of books for practically nothing, too!
Oh yes! The NW Highway store is my very favorite! The Mesquite store is closer to me, but they don’t have squat!
Hi Jordan – Are you back to blogging? I’ll have to stop by and visit!
Christine – We were there for hours on Saturday and can you believe I never even made it to the magazine section! Well that will require another visit 🙂
Amanda – Love the $1 books. We have a pretty good library sale too. It actually does become a bit hard for me to spend full price on a book sometimes 🙂
Danielle – It’s amazing how little those big books go for isn’t it? The best part is that a lot of them are in really good condition too.
Andi – Thanks for the heads up on the Mesquite one, won’t be making it over there then!
I thought Katy Gardner wrote ‘Losing Gemma’ …?
Kimbofo – You are absolutely right. I think the cold weather we’ve been having has messed with my mind 🙂
Love Song is a beautiful book, but Shiver is my favourite.
