My husband had to buy a couple of books recently and well I wasn’t going to be left out of that book order so I treated myself to a few mysteries. Today our box arrived and here are the books I got:
- Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill. I know there are a bunch of you who liked this one right? I am pretty sure Andi and Les in NE are two who encouraged me to put this one on my TBR list.
- Blind Justice by Bruce Alexander. I love historical mysteries and Gavin recently recommended this one so I couldn’t pass up on it.
- When Gods Die by C.S. Harris. I really liked the first book in the series (I still need to blog about it!) so I had to get the second one and see what happens next.
- The Wrong Kind of Blood by Declan Hughes. Someone in my mystery book group recommended this author. Anyone else read this book?
We’ve got a night of stormy weather so maybe I should curl up with one of these thrilling books.

Hi! I found your blog through a Google search for book blogs, and was thrilled to find it. We have a blog and podcast with a similar name (Books on the Nightstand), but I’m sure nobody will confuse us. Love your book arts work — I spent a few years studying bookbinding as a hobby and wish I had enough time now to get back into it.
I am dying to read the Joe Hill book — I’ve heard wonderful things from people, incuding booksellers that I trust. I think I need a bigger nightstand! But then, don’t we all?
Ann
I have Heart Shaped Box as well. I just need to get to it.
EEEEEE!!!!!! Tickled to see that you now have Heart-Shaped Box in your possession. I hope you like it as much as I did. The first half is of the utmost creeptaculousness.
I saw “Heart-Shaped Box” in our little library here and was really tempted to pick it up. But if Joe Hill writes scary books as well as his dad, I don’t know if I can handle it. So I kept passing it by.
I was just looking at heart-shaped box in the bookstore not long ago…hmmm, might need to check that one out!
I actually read Blind Justice for a book club (when I belonged to one locally several years back), and really enjoyed it. I always meant to read more in the series, but I’ve never gotten around to it. Enjoy your books–mysteries are great in stormy weather!
I got Blind Justice last year sometime but there it still sits. I wonder if there will be another mystery challenge this summer. There are so many that I’m itching to read.
Hope you have fun this weekend with reading.
I am hoping to spend time reading also.
I’ve never read Heart Shaped Box but know it is popular with other bloggers – I might pick it up when Carl’s RIP challenge rolls around.
I loved Heart-Shaped Box as well. I’m not familiar with the others, but I hope they turn out to be good!
Oooo, I’ve wanted to read Heart-Shaped Box for ages, and now I want to read it even more!
Curses, it’s checked out. Now I’ll have to wait even longer.
That looks like a great set of books, Iliana. I hope you enjoy your stormy night of reading.
Ann – Thanks for stopping by and love your blog name 😉 — I’ve been doing bookbinding for several years now but in the past few months I’ve been a bit more serious about studying it and practicing it more. It’s addictive isn’t it?
Chrisbookarama – I know… when do we get to all of the books we want to read right?
Andi – Creeptaculousness, now that’s a word that needs to be in Webster’s! 🙂
aka_nik – From what I hear, his books are just as creepy! I didn’t start it yet but I’ll keep you posted.
Christine – Remember when we used to read all those scary books in high school? Ha,ha..
Danielle – Oh good to hear another good review for Blind Justice. It sounds good so I’m looking forward to it!
tanabata – I had forgotten about that challenge but it was great wasn’t it? I think that was the only challenge I finished last year as I read so many mysteries 🙂
Isabel – I’m so looking forward to the weekend! Enjoy yours too.
Stephanie – I think that’d be the perfect read for that challenge. I also hear good things about his other book 20th Century Ghosts!
Nymeth – Yay, more good things about Heart Shaped Box!
Leila – Go put a hold on it… It sounds like it’s a must read 🙂
Literary Feline – Can you believe I didn’t start any of my books last night? Shame. But, I do have some other good ones on the nightstand for now. I may be tempted to start one soon though.
I don’t know “Heart Shaped Box.” I’ll have to look for it at the library.
Here are three more to add to you list: The Osgoode Trilogy by Mary E. Martin. It’s a set of three legal suspense novels, featuring lawyer Harry Jenkins. There’s lots to like here in the three books: the action, the plots, the characters. In all three Martin gives us characters that are well-rounded and three-dimensional. (I’ve gotten so I really dislike the wooden villains — all bad, all crazy, all whatever — that so many authors create for their novels. Come on, not too many people are all bad or all good.) In fact, one of Harry’s endearing qualities is his very human-ness.
A box of new books, mysteries no less, arriving on a stormy night! What could be better?
Yay!!! Hope you love it as much as I did. Oooh, just thinking about those first few chapters gives me the creeps! 🙂
dew – Perfect timing right? I’ve only started one but wow it’s great.
Les in NE – I’m at about page 100 and have already been creeped out several times! This book is fab! 🙂
