Over the holidays I set to work on my bookshelves. I got rid of several bags of books but of course to fill in the few empty pockets left by those books I did a bit of shopping at Half Price Books. I found some amazing bargains.
- Sylvia’s Lovers by Elizabeth Gaskell.
- The First Cut by Peter Robinson. I’m a big fan of his Inspector Banks series but this one is a standalone thriller so it’ll be interesting to read about a different character.
- The Girl of His Dream by Donna Leon. I also enjoy the Brunetti series quite a bit.
- The Brambles by Eliza Minot.
- The Man in the Window by K.O. Dahl. I enjoy Scandinavian crime fiction so I’m excited to try this Norwegian author.
- On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan.
- Among Other Things I’ve Taken Up Smoking by Aoibheann Sweeney.
- The Accidental by Ali Smith
Very excited to have found several books that have been on my wish list for a while and better yet, all of these for $1 a piece. Can you believe that? Gotta love HPB.
Have you gotten any good book deals recently?

Wow, you’ve got a great haul there! And not to mention a great deal too! 🙂
One dollar a book sounds like my kind of deal! Enjoy your reads!
My book buying ban is already being tested. I found several books I wanted to buy in my library’s book sale today (doesn’t help that the overflow is stored right behind my desk), but I resisted! Love hearing about your purchases – I’m a Peter Robinson fan so will be interested to see what you think of his standalone.
The Brambles has been on my wishlist forever, I’ll look forward to your review. If it’s positive I guess I’ll probably buy it! 🙂
I read Sylvia’s Lovers last year. It was my first experience with Gaskell and now I am currently reading Cranford!
I read Among Other Things a couple years ago and quite liked it. I also really enjoyed On Chesil Beach. You had some good finds!
I haven’t been to a discount/used bookstore yet this year, but I did have some Borders coupons and Amazon had a couple used books I was looking for, so I did snag about 5 books for about $30 total. Not too shabby!
Melody – I know right? I love HPB! 🙂
Vasilly – So far I’m enjoying adding them to the shelves 🙂
Anbolyn – Oh that’s so hard! I can barely do a library ban. I don’t think I’d have a lot of success with a book ban. I didn’t even realize Robinson had any standalones. So excited.
Joanna – It may be a while until I get to it but I think it’ll be good! I had that one on my wishlist forever it seemed!
Stephanie – I still haven’t tried any Gaskell although I keep buying her books. Ha. I hope I’ll like it.
Lesley – I think Chesil Beach got quite a lot of mixed reviews and frankly I haven’t loved his books but some of them have definitely made me think so I have high hopes for this one. You got some good deals too. Wait for my next post, I’ll share even more books I’ve bought. yikes. I’m on a binge 🙂
Wish HPB were here as well, Awesome books 🙂
Did you know that you can now buy books from HPB online? Dangerous I know.
Also, saw on a more recent post you just picked up Her Fearful Symmetry–so did I. Hope you enjoy! Not sure when I’ll get around to it.
I loved the Sweeney book and Ali Smith’s novel, too. I also want to read Sylvia’s Lovers, the Dahl book and the Robinson! Great choices.
I never mind giving up a few books if I get new ones in return! Hope you enjoy your latest acquisitions.
