I didn’t get to do much reading this weekend as I had some family in town. We were busying celebrating with a Rosca de Reyes (luckily I didn’t get a piece with the doll!) and doing some shopping. My cousins left this afternoon and my husband and I went to see Juno to catch up on our movie viewing. It’s not just our book TBR lists that are always growing but our movies to watch list as well. So all in all a great weekend but now it’s time to get back to my books.
I’m very close to finishing Ines of My Soul by Isabel Allende. I have been a bit disappointed with this book but I’ll save my thoughts for another post. I want to have this one read by Tuesday for book group.
The other book I’m also close to finishing is A Mind to Murder by P.D. James. A couple of weeks ago Danielle and Dorothy W. were mentioning the Inspector Dalgliesh series and since I wasn’t enjoying the Allende book too much I wanted to mix in a book I figured I would enjoy. This is the second one in the series and it’s good.
Finally, I just opened Great Expectations today. I’m skipping the intro because, well, I just tend to do that. I usually read the intro after the fact. Anyway, it’s getting late so I’m off to bed with these books close at hand.
I am struggling to read another Dickens book, Barnarby Rudge.
There is so much detail in it and I am only on page 32. Hope your Dickens reading goes smoother.
So, is Juno a good movie?
My favorite Dickens’ was Bleak House — a huge tome, but I loved it!
I often save the intro for last as well. Otherwise, I find that the entire plot has been given away and there’s nothing to be surprised by.
What a great blog post title! I love all three!
I never read Intros, so I don’t blame you for skipping it. They always give too much away!! I hope you enjoy GE. I’m almost finished!
I’m glad you’re enjoying the Dalgliesh book! I’ll have to get another one soon.
My equivalent of your cinema to be seen is my CD to be heard pile. I’m not sure it’s any smaller than the tbr pile in terms of numbers, fortunately it looks a lot smaller.
Did you like Juno? I’ve heard it’s good and it’s made by a Minnesotan! Enjoy Great Expectations. I always read the indroductions last too.
I am more behind on movies for the end of 2007/start of 2008 than I thought I would be with all my time off. Now I’m back to work and still haven’t seen Juno or Sweeney Todd. Bad me!
Hi! Like Stefanie, I want to hear what you think about Juno. And also like Stefanie, I always read the introductions last, too! Isn’t it great when you find others who share your reading idiosyncrasies? 🙂
Isabel – So far, it’s good but I’m only about 30 pages in. I like that the chapters are short. Juno was cute.
Jenclair – Haven’t read that one. The only Dickens I’ve read before is A Christmas Carol 🙂
Tara – Exactly! I mean, even if the book is well known and I may sort of know things about it, I still don’t want to be spoiled.
Heather – Me too 🙂 I’ve got a long ways to go yet but like what I’m reading so far.
Dorothy W. – The only thing I wonder is why did I wait so long to pick up another James book. I need to look for the next one in the series now.
Ann Darnton – Ha,ha.. Actually, this reminds me that I need to put together some new playlists for my iPod otherwise I’m stuck listening to the same stuff for ever!
Stefanie – Well, I really wanted to like Juno but I didn’t love it. It was cute and some parts were really sweet but I wasn’t blown away.
Carl V. – I saw a preview for Sweeney Todd finally and man, I’ve got to see that! I love Johnny Depp but wasn’t really interested by what I’d heard of the film. Now it’s a must 🙂
Gentle Reader – I think what I didn’t like too much about Juno was that some of the quirkiness seemed a bit forced. Like it was trying too hard to be a cool/hip movie. Oddly enough some of my favorite characters were the step-mom and the dad. So not even the main characters!
I used to love Allende’s work and have read most of her earlier books, but I haven’t read so much of her newer stuff. I read so much Latino fiction for a while that I think I got burned out on it. I’ll be curious to hear what you say about Ines… Glad to hear you are enjoying Dalgliesh. I plan on going back to the beginning and starting there.
